NEW ARCHITECTURE SPOILS
CITY'S BEAUTY, SAY BOMANS
ROME, June 24. (A. P.) The
Vandals, who swept down upon
Rome In the early centuries of the
Christian era, destroyed wantonly
the great monuments of the em
pire, and the gentry of the Middle
Age. who continued the desecra
tion by tearing down such magni
ficent structures as the Colosseum
to obtain free stone, did less to
destroy the beauty and personality
of the city than modern architects
and builders are doing.
This Is the lament of hundreds
of Italian and foreign artists and
lovers of architectural beauty who
complain that the curse of stand
ardization has fallen upon modern
Italian architecture. The charm
of the old Rome, they say, will
have been sacrificed within a dec
ade to the ill conceived Idea of
making the city a weak Imitation
of some bustling unbeautlful mid
dle western American town.
Scores of ugly apartment houses,
each like the next, with no archi
tectural distinction, are rapidly be
ing built In the new Pratl and Lud
ovlsl Quarter, and In many other
I sections of the city, while most of
the new public buildings are ills-
lingirsnwi only ny ineir uKiiur...
Italians do not object to the con
struction of houses with modern
improvements, but they maintain
that some effort should be made
In the external decorations to con
form with the already existent
beautiful examples of medieval
and ancient architecture.
