AMUNDSEN REACHES
WITHIN 150 MILES OF
NORTH POLE
(Continued from ruure V)
eon had the right idea In suggest
ing submarine an the beat means
for Arctic exploration.
Continual fog, ha aald. renders
low flying and landing perilous.
Captain Anton llelnan, former
seaplane pilot and advisory con
structor of the dirigible Shenan
doah, bIko scoffed at the use of
airplanes, but advocated dirigibles.
Ha aald there wan 3,000 mile of
Ideal flying condition between
I-aki hurxt, N. J., and the Pole, and
could not understand why the Davy
department would not aend either
the Shenandoah or the Los Angeles
on such a trip.
Henry Woodhouse, president of
the Aerial league of American,
however, claimed that Amundsen's
feat revolutionized Arctic explora
tion. "In 28 days," he said, "Amund
den has done what he could not
have done in the old way In less
than a year."
COPENHAGEN1, June 19. The
Social Democraten publishes a re
port from Oslo, the Norwegian cap
ital, staling that Captain Roald
Amundsen, who returned to 8pltz
borten yesterday after bis sensa
tional Arctic flight, is dissatisfied
with the results attained and Is
"quite determined to resume the
attempt" to reach the Pole. The
(explorer Is quoted as declaring that
the experience gained In bis pres
ent attempt would enable him to
at'aln his goal.
The other members of the- expe
dition, the account continues, ap
pear equally anmated by a desire
to beat the aerial Polar expeditlona
planned by other countries.
They expressed the view that
important scientific results had
jbeen achieved thus far. Captain
lAmundsen himself was reticent.
I Amundsen's comrades were
I unanimous in their appreciation of
;his leadership. The American
I member of the party, Lincoln Ells
worth was saddened by the news
swaltlng him of the death of his
I father during bis stay in the north,
but said that he would continue
his financial backing of Captain
Amundsen.

CHICAGO. June 19. Chief Jus-
tlct Harry Olson of the Municipal
i court, who has been the chief fig
! ure in the prosecution of -William
,1). Shepherd, accused of causing
the death or William N. McClln
tock, declared today that regard
less of the outcome of the Shep
herd trial, "Isabelle Pope, McClin
tock's fiancee will come into pos
session of the McCllntock fortune"
Judge Olson said Miss Pope
eventually will be declared McClin
took's lawful heir on the ground
that Shepherd obstructed and held
back the wedding contract.
"That wedding contract will be
held binding In my Judgment", he
said, "and when It is, Isabelle Pope
will receive all the personal prop
erty, one ha'f of the real eatate
and a life Interest In the other half
of real estate. All except about
J200.000 of the estate will go to
her. She will receive the full
rights of a widow.
"It was out of kindness of her
heart that she gladly agreed to di
vide the estate with the other
heirs".
' Testifying at the trial, Miss Pope
i admitted that the prosecution of
