FAKE STOCK SWINDLERS
Kstlmates by New York banking
authorities place tho number of
professional swindler in the Unit
ed States at 3.lNt,uo; and th
amount annually stolen by them
through lake stocks alone, at not
less than Jjnti.uuo.uoO.
Yet it is found that but one In
11 of these criminals is v.ver ap
prehended and brought to punish-
meiii. 'j he principal' reason for
this immunity from punishment la
that the victims are ashamed to
con fens that they have beta swin
dled. Such diffidence la not only a
foolish weakness but Is a stimulant
to swindling, if the victims but
knew It, the ordinary established
professional swindier, such as the
;fake mock broker, lays aide from
a tenth to a third of the money he
M is, to relnmburse such victims as
loudly demand re.stftui ion. It Is
'cheaper for ihese nlminaln to shut
'the months of noisy victims than
to suffer the adverse advertising
Ih-y would receive because of thu j
complaints. I'ortland Telei;ram.

Within Ihe shopping memory of
