Voicing warning against the
deadly effects ot carbon mon
oxide gas, present tn the ex
haust of automobiles, the United
States Bureau ot Mines sets
forth the following general
rules: .it i
Never run automobile -engine
in closed or poorly ventilated
garage. ...
Never work under machine
with motor running even la
open air. ''
Never close all car wlndowa
with engine running, even la
open air.
It la not true that the air in
a closed garage la aafe ao long
as a gas engine continues to
run.
Move a victim of carbon
monoxide poisoning Into the
open air; supply artificial res
piration; give him oxygen;
massage his limbs; keen lilin
warm and quiet.
PITTSBURGH. June 16. (A.
P.) With hundreds ot thousands
ut automobiles being put into use
in the United Slates during the
summer months, the United States
Bureau of Mines gaa experts, sta
tioned at Pittsburgh, have again
sounded a,warning to the motorists
to exercise caution to prevent seri
ous sickness and death from the
deadly gaa from motor exhaust,
carbon monoxide.
These experts, who delve into
the mysteries ot the deadly gas.
have a list of "doa'la for motorists,
as well as a list of "remedies"
when the "don'ta" are disregarded
by careless automobile operators:
The "don'ta" Include:
Guard' against running an auto
mobile engine In a poorly ventilat
ed or closed garage. '
Do not work under a' machine
with the motor running, even
though it Is in the open air.
Sitting In a closed car with the
engine running Is dangerous; al
ways have the wlndowa open.
l'ersons wishing to avoid this
dangerous gaa must see to it that
their garages are well ventilated.
They should avoid exposure to
carbon monoxide and, where It la
necessary to come Into contact
with It, protective equipment
should be provided.
A victim of the gas should be
taken into the fresh air as soon as
possible. It the breathing has
stopped, artificial respiration must
be supplied. For this purpose pure
oxygen can be used or oxqgen
with five percent carbon dioxide,
to be given for about 20 minutes.
The patient's limbs should be mas
saged, to restore and increase cir
culation, and the body should be
kept warm. The victim must rest,
avoiding any exertion whatever.
Carbon monoxldo Is doubly dang
erous, tho experts say, because It
Is hard to detect it in the air., it
has no odor and la tasteless. Symp
toms are readily found, bowovur.
A slight case finds the victim suf
fering from headache. As the per
centage of carbon monoxide in the
blood increases the headache be
comes more severe. The victim s
legs weaken and respiration in
creases. Then comes a couapae,
followed by unconsciousness, and
finally death.
The dangerous fallacy mat tne
atmosphere in a closed garage is
safo as long as an automobile en
gine continues to function, has
been disproved by tests. A aog
was olacod on the front seat ot a
touring car In a closed brick gar
age, and the motor was allowed
to Idle. After Zu minutes opera
tion tho animal lost consciousness.
At that time the air showed 1.8
percent carbon monoxide. Tho
engine was allowed to run until it
stonoed from lack of air at tne
end of two hours, when the per
centage ot gas was 2.1, enough to
cause Instant death.
This Incident the experts cttea
In order to Impress niotnrlats that
ihov should not nrrmlt Ihelr mot
ors to idle In the garage while they
return to the house to obtain some
forgotten article.
