THE PERSONALITY OF A CITY
jT.lA. Washington correspondent reports that at a recent
-jWhiJe House reception, a woman in the line, after shaking
V hands with the president, remarked with some enthusiasm,
-"Ira from Boston". The president replied, "You'll never
'get" over it". As "Cal" is intimately familiar with the
famous city of baked beans, there was truth as well as
'. pleasantry in his remark. Boston has been supposed in the
J Pfc to stand for culture and conservatism. While the
character of that city has changed during recent years, yet
the old timers of Boston did have those characteristics to a
large extent. So one could go through half of the communi-
tiqj in the country, and show that they have had certain
trflts that they have impressed on their residents. Some
V PT'e of course are so nondescript in character, that they
remain about the same wherever they go. But those who
are more responsive to influences about them, are shaped
;Jt)X- their environment. 'She dominating traits of a city are
f laYgely created by the leaderiip it has in the present or
has had in the past. A small group of people of forceful
personality can often put their stamp on their home towns
. and powerfully sway their future development. The way
to shape the character of a city, and create a kind of com
munity personality that moulds the character of the people,
is to cherish high ideals and standards. If those who hold
positions of influence have mediocre purposes, their city is
not likely to attain a reputation for its distinctive excellen-
"iRL But it is possible by a constant insistence on high aims,
tTSive a city certain superior .characteristics,' so that its
iiSjWtutions and facilities and activities are held up to high
standards, which have some tendency to impress their fine
stamp on its citizens.
