We wish to announce that we have leased the Myrtle
Creek Flour Mills and have a full line of flour and
feeds for sale at that place. We believe that we can
give better service, and save money for our cus
tomers in Southern Douglas County by having a dis
tributing point closer to them. We expect to maintain
as low prices as possible and to give the same good
service and quality products at the Myrtle Creek
plant as in Roseburg.

CHICAGO, May 22. The first
12-men decided upon by the 'State
aa a jury to try William I. Shep
herd on a chance of killing his
wife's millionaire ward. William
M. McClintock, with typhoid germa
will be accepted by the defense.
Shepherd's attorneys said they
would do so to halt tnk of defenae
tampering with jurors and wit
nesses which has been Investigat
ed since Jiobert White, state wit
ness .diHappeared, and Philip Bar
ry a venireman, said he had been
"approached" by a man who said
he was acting for the defense.
James C. Callan, local politician,
named by Harry, denied through
his attorney that he had made any
attempts to "fix" a Juror. The at
torney said he would surrender
Callan to the prosecutor.
While the county grand Jury
continued Us Investigation of
White's disappearance, search for
him extended to Miami, Fla., where
Hobert K. Crowe, state's attorney
was told he had fled. Miami auth
orities did not find him at a Riven
address and detectives were sent
on roads to Jacksonville to Inter
cept him should he come that way.
White pave the defense an affi
davit withdrawing- an original
statement that Shepherd had been
connected with C. C. Farrnan. head
of a small science school, before
ho vanished, Arthur Byrne, a prK
vate detective employed by the
defense, was reported to have told
the grand Jury. Byrne was said to
have testified that White had told
him his life had been threatened
and that tne original statement
had been drawn from him by in
timidation. The state planned to
use White in corroboration of
Kalmnn who confessed he supplied
Shepherd with the typhoid germs
for a promise of 1100,000 from Mc
Clintoek's estate.
A different story of White's dis
appearance was reported to the
grand Jurors by William Adams,
blind news vendor, who said Wfiite
told him he had been offered
im o nnd a furnished bungalow In
Florida to leave Chicago. Adiims
said White told him he Intended
refusing the offer.
Meanwhile the progress of sel
ecting a Jury has been backwards.
Two state peremptory challenges
reducted the tentative Jurors to
ten one less than had been obtain
ed last Monday when the trial
opened. Seventy veniremen have
been questioned.
The name of Henry J. Smith,
who was a juror In the Simon (
Donnel labor trial a few years auo
was fined $1,000. was recognized In
the ventre list today by State At
torney Crowe. He summoned
Smith to his office and when the
latter admitted he was the man
who was paid $1,000 In the oll lab
or trial. Smith was dismissed from
the venire.

this stuff all day and there ain't

Another Del rotter said that it
was perhaps like old wine. Fer

Wayne B. Wheeler, general
counsel of the Anti-Saloon League
of A merica cross d the line as
an observer, he said. For thirty
minutes he said he sat In a Fort
Krie hotel with a bottle before
him on the tat) I'd but didn't drink.
J "The whole thing Is a joke," he
t remarked on his return to Buf
falo. "It was very apparent that
this stuff doesn't satisfy the fel

I Ita sale is going to result either
' in a weakening of the present

to speed up law enforcement.
Mr. Wheeler said Ire saw no
one who was "staggering drunk",
but several were a little wobbly.
He characterized the beer as

Forty-four pef cent of the earnings of the family of moderate income
is spent for food. There is no merchant more necessary in the general.'
scheme of distribution than' the food merchant and probably in no other
business occupation would be found as low an average intelligence and
initiative. A great many stores in Roseburg are still operating as in the
cracker-barrel age, still others who are quite content to sell to people of
financial responsibility on credit at a 1 0 to 15 higher price .than is
necessary to handle the merchandise. These conditions will only be
changed for the better by a thoughtful discrimination of the buying public.
