and then set fire to her cottage.
Mlaa Alda llayward, a niece of
Mrs Towna la missing and Is be
lieved to have been abducted.
Mrs. Towns and her niece are
anionic the most respected citizens
of the town.
According to the story told by
Mrs. Towns, she and her niece re
turned last night from Wlnthrop
vIllaKe to the cottage on the east
shore of Lake Marancook and aa
they entered the door two shots
were fired from within. Uoth bul
lets struck Mrs. Towns. She fell
on a couch In a half conscious
condition and later heard the
voice of a man telling MIhs Hay
wnrd that if she would accompany
liim on a Journey of fifty miles no
harm would come to her. She
heard Miss llayward ask:
"Hut what If my aunt should
die?" The man then looked at her
as Bhe lay on the couch. Mrs.
Towns said. Afterward he went
upstairs and she heard him speak
ing of money. The next she real
ized was that site was alone In the
house and It was on fire. She re
vived suffiefcntly to drug herself
from the place and seek refuge In
a neighboring cottage.
