OREGON RURAL FOLKS LIVE LONGEST
; . Rural residents of Oregon arc longer lived than their
city brothers, according to the agricultural Foundation.
(There are fully 29 per cent more deaths per hundred thou
sand population in the larger cities than in places having
10,000 ieopIe.
" . I .' Analysis of mortality statistics for Oregon brings to
light some interesting facts concerning the health of both
the city man and the small town resident, says the Founda
tion. There are nearly twice as many deaths from appendi
citis in the cities than occur in the rural districts. Tubercu
losis and diphtheria are not as fatal in the outlying sections
JUT they are in the crowded centers, and neither cancer nor
.diabetes are as deadly in the open spaces as they are to resi
dents of cities. Deaths from heart disease are much more
common in the cities, and bronchitis and pneumonia do not
-take their toll in the rural districts to the same extent as in
the cities.
Death by suicide is a much more frequent occurrence in
'.Hie city than in the smaller places, and the same is found to
"Jiold true for homicide, the Foundation reports. On the oth
;er hand, scarlet fever is found to take its heaviest toll in the
; more isolated regions, and influenza is a greater menace in
the country than in the city.
. - The lower death rate of the rural sections of the state
as compared to the cities is no doubt due in a large measure
to the more normal, natural life that the rural resident leads
. as compared to the man in the large cities, states the Found
nation. And it is especially remarkable that only three per
"cent of the country's rural residents are estimated to observe
. the fundamentals of health in the disposal of their sewage
-and the safeguarding of theirdrinking water supply. As ru
bral health work is expanded, a big change may be looked for
" in the prevention of premature death and human illness as
."well as promotion of public health and economic savings.

A new experiment In regulating
and controlling traffic on the main
streets during the summer, waa
started last night.. This consists
of parking spaces marked off on
tbe pavement on Jackson alreet,
these spaces being wide enough
to permit cars and tracks to park
without extending Into the street,
while the spacea are long enough
to enable care to get in and out
without difficulty.
Methods of handling traffic and
preventing congestion have been
studied for some time by city of
ficials, and a number of new ideas
have been worked out. The new
traffic guides on Intersections have
proven quite valuable In prevent
ing Jama at Intersections, aa long
cars are enabled to make the
turns mole easily. It la planned to
aecure more of these guides for the
other Intersections on the main
streets.
The new traffic ordnance, now
under consideration, will make sev
eral material changes in the city
regulations. Cars will be penaliz
ed for going too alow as well aa
too fast nn the main .Iroal. tha
clause being inserted to prevent

the new state law, the county
court at its last session set aside
the agricultural district surround
ing Glide as a special rodent dis
trict. Under this law tho court
can, upon petition of 75 per cent
of the residents, designate a par
ticular district where a campaign
may be waged for rodent control,

given 30 days in which to start
their poison campaign, and if they
fall, the county can appoint a
man to do the work, and then
