HOOD RIVER, Ore., May 11.
Hood River suffered the most se
vere fire loss in its history Sunday
morning when the big plant of the
Hood River Apple Vinegar Com
pany and the warehouse of Kelly
Ilrothers, merchants and apple
dealers, burned. The estimate of
the combined loss was placed at
approximately $7X0.000, the vine
gar plant's damage estimated at
$150,000.
The origin of the fire, which ap
parently started In the boiler room
was not determined. Geerge Carl
ton, night watchman and boiler
man, stated that he had started a
fire In the boilers about four o'
clock. Shortly befure six resi
dents saw the smoke and flame
The fire had gained such head
way when the fire department ar
rived that all efforts of bringing u
under control were fruitless.
While C. J. Calkins, founder and
manager of the vinegar plant said
he thought the plant would prob
ably be rebuilt on more modern ,
lines, he declined to make any uet
inlte statement.
Kelly Ilrothers, whose ware
house was a three story wooden
structure, will be replaced at once
with a more modern plant.

These events brought out the city's
best musicians before the public,
and people unacquainted with the
great number of musicians in Rose

the city contains so many excel

credit is due those who sponsored
the observance, and the musicians
who gave so freely of their time
