ROSEBURG, OREGON, FRIDAY, MAY 8, 12S.
MODERN RESTLESSNESS
Z Many observers are deeply impressed by the spirit of
Trestlessness which they see in the modern world. They see
I the roads crowded with automobiles, the occupants thereof
' apious to get into some different place from the one in
-; which they were in before. After they get there, they are no
- better satisfied, but wish to keep on somewhere else. This
- snirit has become more anoarent. because the automobile has
I given the people the chance for quick motion from place to
place at a moderate expense. Yet this is not a wholly new
-development Before the days of automobiles, there was the
'same desire for going somewhere. Many young men of lim-
eited incomes in those days kept horses for pleasure driving,
and were sometimes lectured by their elders for the extrava
gance of keeping a beast who required constant feeding. It
' seemed a very sporting thing to hitch up the old nag and go
r t.ssome town eight or ten miles away and stand on the side
'. walks and watch the people go by. It would appear a some-
. what tame amusement now, but it expressed the same spirit
that we find today. There is a natural longing to see differ
j eftt scenes, and average human nature is sweetened and
2 brightened by changes. People get somewhat larger notions,
- and their minds are not limited by the narrow circle of their
- own little neighborhood. But the folks who take all their eve-
rungs and Sundays for flying around the country, are not
' gaining as much mental development as those1 who are quiet-
ly, sitting under the evening lamp, reading the story of world
progress which the newspaper and the certain magazine
- bring to them. Motion is stimulating up to a certain extent.
But if one must have it incessantly, it suggests that one may
; so lack the capacity for mental movement, that the physical
kind has to be substituted in its place.

'; SAVINGS BANK GAINS
i Savings deposits in $03 banks amounted to seven per
'. cent more April 1 than they were a year ago. This is a most
X Encouraging feature, and indicates that the year has shown
; development in prosperity. It ought also to mean that a
I f reat mass of people have decided that their only hope for
security and welfare is to cultivate the saving habit. Also
I that they have concluded that they make no mistake when
' they invest in good, banks in their home neighborhoods. The
payings deposit in a bank assembles the product of the thrift
of many families, and puts it to work, In the ways which ex-
pert officials decide is the best for the depositors. The
managements of these banks are often asked to risk this
money in securities that promise high rates of interest, and
to loan it to individuals whose credit is doubtful. These man
agements acquire from long experience a keen insight into
1 business propositions and personal character. They are wise
enough to know that it is far better to give up a little inter
est, rather than place money on enterprises where they may
" lose the whole principal. At the same timu they are keen to
earn every dollar of interest they can, and to pay their de
positors every cent that is consistent with sound business.
, Some stock salesman may come around to the people and tell
them not to be satisfied with bank interest, at a rate that is
too low. Millions of people have thereby .been tempted to
draw that money out of banks, to put into risky schemes. A
multitude of them have bitterly regretted that act, and have
wished they had the little old bank book back, with its sure
interest payment piling up month after month. The people
of Roseburg should never overlook tin advantage of deposit
ing money in the banks of their own neighborhood.
