PROJECT TO CON
STRUCT 250 MINES
OF R. R. IS FILED
- (AaorUtnJ Prtm Uwd Win.) t
WASHINGTON. May 7. A pro
Ject for constructing 250 miles of
new line In central Oregon, was '
filed today with the interstate
commerce commission by the Ore
gon Trunk Hallway, a corporation
controlled by the Northern i'acif
Ic, Great Northern-liurlington
group. No estimates of cost were
Included. , (
The projected line will run from ;
Uend, Oregon, in a general south- j
erly direction 170 mile to Klam
ath Falls, via Honanza and Clean. '
In addition 80 miles of additional ;
main line would be built through
northward from Klamath Falls
along the went side of Klamath '
Lake and returning to the main !
trunk again at a Junction point 1
called Skookum.
The line would open an avenue
of transportation for very large 1
timber tracts, the application said,
and in addition would be some
traffic from agricultural and graz- i
Ing Interests. It was further snid
that the Oregon Trunk vus affil
iated with other railroads which I
operate 27,000 miles of line and
that these corporations were pre
pared to finance the extension.
There Is pending before the com- j
mission a petition by the Oregon j
public utilities commission which
asks that railroads serving Ore I
gon be required to build a large i
amount of new extensions in the
central and eastern sections of tha
state. The Oregon Trunk propos
al filed today In part covers the ,
routes on which the Oregon com
mission has sought to force new
construction. '
YRKKA, Cnl.. May 7. The ex- ;
I pendtture of approximately $250,-
0(H) for thousands of acres of land ;
In the Klamath River region with
in the past few weeks, which be- ;
came known here yesterday has ;
given rise to the belief In many i
quarters that It presages tho ex-
'tension of transcontinental railway
lines from Reno, Nev., to Kureka,
i f'al., where they will join wifh the
J line of the Northwestern Pacific
I Railway Company.
The proposed extension, it was
reported here hint night woulfl be ;
I from Reno and thence to Klamath
! Falls and Hornbrook and Kureka.
j The purported holding company
lis the California City and County
i Land Company of San Francisco. ;
The prevailing opinion here is
that the Interests behind the ac
quisition of the1 land is the Chicago,-
Milwaukee and St. I'aul Rail- 1
! road Company. Most of the pro
' perty has been transferred to the
; California City and County Ijtnd
; Company. The purchased proper
, tics includes the I). M. Horn ranch, j
the Robert L. Ferral ranch, the ;
Cook and Smith ranches and thou- ;
sands of acres in the Woyorhaues- 1
1 er Realty Company's holdings. I
! PORTLAND. Ore.. May 7. Well S
Informed Portland railroad men
sny the consistent Interpretation
of Yrekn report is that the South
ern Pacific contemplates extend
ing a branch from its projected
Modoc Northern line along the
northerly slop of Mount Shasta
to the Southern Pacific main line
and building from Hornhrook
! the lower Klamath river to K
j connecting there with the
I western Pacific. Such i
! would give direct connection
middle western and eastern mar
kets for lumber and other products
of northwestern California. The
Modoc Northern will bo tho South
ern Pacific's short lino from Kliim
ath Falls, Ore., to the east via the
'Oakland Ogden route. It la incon
ceivable say local rail experts, that
the Chicago, Milwaukee and St.
Paul, now In receivership and
! without a mile of track south' e
the Columbia river will be consid
ering any construction In Caltforn
! la. The Northwestern Pacific Is
owned Jointly by the Southern
clflc and (he Santa Fe.
