The tlmeber from 7,500 acres of
land Is required each week for
Americas' Sunday newspapers. It
takes the pulp trees from that much
land to provide their newsprint pa
per. Yet publishing Is only one of
a hundred groups of industries that
draw their material from the for.
est. The gigantic lumbe Industry
with Its 20,000 mills, consumes only
a third of the wood that Is annually
removed from the forest. More
wood Is used for fuel than for lum
her. Directly and indirectly the
resonslbllity for depletion of the
forestst rests on every citizen who
uses wood In any of Its manufac
tured forms. Yet we still permit
flrts to burn over almost as much
wooded land as the woodsman cuts
over. Carelessness and waste char
aoterlze our attitude toward for

the formulation of a creative iub

public policies that will encourage

Creek City Once Home
of the Apostle Paul
Scholars state that Kt. Paul's
short epistle to Titus nus written
during his short period of freedom
after his first imprisonment In
Koine, hut Dot long before his sec
ond imprisonment with which the
scriptural account of the career of
the great apostle terminates. In
the twelfth verse of the third cline
ter St. Puul directs Titus to cuiue
to hlin at NIcoiKilla, "for I have de
termined there to winter." Tills
Mcopolls was the celebrated city
of Lplrus. It was known as t lie
"City of Victoria" and was built by
the emperor Augustus In memory of
his nnvul victory at Actlum over the
combined forces of Antony and
C'leopulrn. This victory practically
uiadu Octavlus, later Augustus, t lie
ruler of the Jtoman empire. Tlie
buttle of Actiuin was fought In t lie
year 81 It. C, and four yeurs later
Octavlus was proclaimed emperor
with the title of Augustus. Nlco
polls stood on n penlnsulu on the
west const of Greece nnd on one
side of the peninsula was the bay of
Acrium, the scene of the battle that
takes Its name from that of the bay.
According to tradition. It wits ut
Nlcopolls that St. Paul was made a
prisoner for the second lime and
curried to Koine.
Homing Instinct Strongly
Developed in the Pig
A pig belonging to a Texns farmer
was sold to u dealer who lived eight
miles nwuy. The morning after the
sale the pig reappeared in Its old
sty, hnving escaped from Its new
quarters during the nlgiit.
The homing Instinct Is stronger In
the pig than In most animals. An In
stance similar to the uhove occurred
In Illinois, where a pig traveled 14
miles back to Its old home, after
being sold in a local market.
Darwin believed the pig capable
of developing the sagacity of u dog.
For example, a sow belonging to a
Wisconsin farmer was trained to
hunt game, at which It became more
expert than most pointers. The
fame of fills nniliial spread far and
wide, mid tempting offers were
made to buy It.
Kecords show that pigs In former
days were often used as beasts of
burden, while there Is at least one
well-authentlcaied Instance of a pig
being employed for rounding up
sheep. Perhaps the most curious
use to which the species has ever
been put wus to draw a carriage
for an eccentric Kngllsh nobleman.
Easter Island Statue
Pride of Archeologists
The world's most ancient statue
Is to be found outside, not lutlde,
the liritHi museum.
It 1m suld that It took 200 men
from the crew of his majesty's ship
Topaz, and 300 natives to drag the
statue 'from Its orlginul site, al
though it weighs only four tons. It
Is the work of a race of huge build
ers and was one of many similar
colossal statues, some of them
weighing us much us a hundred
tons, scuttered over Kaster island
lu the l'acillc, London Tit-Hits says.
These hideous Images were' origi
nally supplied with huts. In some
cases weighing unother live or six
tons, which were red because they
were lnude of tufa or volcanic rock.
All the huts have fallen off now
and are found lying uround the
huge statues as though there had
been u high wind.
This race of ancient builders left
traces lu the shape of Immense
stone monuments right across the
l'acillc and many . archeologists
think that the Islands on which
these monuments are found- are the
last remnants left uhove the sur
face of a vast submerged continent.
There is nothing which tlxes the
exact period of this achievement,
hut It is possible that the statues
are at least as old us the pyramids
of Egypt.

In olden times la many parts ut

Why "Z" Comes Last
The great ancestor of our let
