Marshal Layautey, governor of

conscience is pricked by a passage
of the modest, old-fashioned di

Both sets of parents opposed the
match because at one time the
families had been rich, but now
were social climbers, and the
parents wanted each to marry
money. Connie Terhune, wealthy,
wanted to marry Paul. At a party
Chick Adams draws Cleo aside
protesting that Bhe should have

love for Paul, llor grandmother s
diary makes Cleo wonder. Paul,
protests hts love for the girl.
They are wed. Cleos mother be

HIMSELF AND WIFE
4,So does my father want us to
be happy," my husband said to
mo at the other end of the line.
"What do you think? He gave
us a thousand dollars."
"Perfectly splendid. Added to
the fifteen hundred that Pad gave
nv? we ought to be able to live
quite a while very comfortably."
"Did your father give you fif
teen hundred dollars Cleo?" It
seemed to me that Paul was
rather disappointed that the
amount was so big. So I ans
wered :
"Yes, but you need not ap?nd
any of it if you don't want to."
"Hoth your mother and mine
are now eager that we slay with
either of them my whole leave.
Hut not on your life. dear. We're
going to have a real Honeymoon.
We'll stay at the hotel tonight
and then before I'll tell you
all my plans later. Here comes
your mother.
"I'm leaving now. Be down In
front of t..e office." I fairly
pranced there.
Paul fairly putieu we to the
car, but he didn't y a word
and neither did I until we were
quite a way into the country.
"Where nre you going?" I
finally asked.
' i'm fcoing to get away from
the entire mob. This Is the day
that I thought was going to be
the happiest in my life, and it is
the unhnppiest I have ever spent.
It is over now and we are speed
ing away from the whole darn
crowd. When we got up to the
hotel, we'll have something to
cut. I am nearly starved.
"Your mother said that if we
would come to her tonfprht, she
would have some people in. As
though on our wedding night,
we'd want to talk to other peo
ple." "I feel now as though I n'ever
want to talk to anyone but you
again. For you know dear ! do
love you and I feel as though we
had been rohbed of something In
these firxt few hours of our wed
ded life."
Paul nearly ran into u tree.
And ve both laughed as he curs
ed my hat for not only spoiling
his kiss but nearly breaking the
machine.
When we arrived at the hotel,
Paul strode farward to the desk.
I wanted to go with him for I
had an unholy desire to see how
"Lieutenant and ' m. Paul Arm

gist nr.
I stayed uacK next the elevator.

Eighteen powerful locomotives,

made Known today by J. H. Dyer,
general manager of the company.
The piiKinr-s will cot S1.4H7,7u.
Dyer also points out that from
preliminary plans to completion
the locomotives will be Southern
Pacific products and that at least
6m per cent of the cost will repre
sent wages. "The decision to build
these engines tn our Sacramento
shop," said Dyer, "is as important
to the Pacific coast as the cstab

Here's something about those
I'aciftc coast iron horses. Kach
of them will weigh, with "tender,
610,000 pounds. The Coltis P. Hunt

locomotives, weighs 3!tfO00 pounds.
One of the first "big" engines built
on the Pacific coast weighed, with
tender, f7,fou pounds. The engine
that drew the first transcontinental
train from Sacramento to Ocden,
I weighed 65,500 pounds. The new
! engines will be of the 4-8-2 moun

j will be two sets of wheels three
! pair In each set under the tender
j fco that under engine and tender
there will be 26 wheels.
The driving wheels, 4 pairs of
them, will be 734 inches in diam

have two cylinders of 2S-lnch di

; Main and shle rods will be of

strength of which makes it pos

I On a grade of 26 feet to the mile
one of these engines will draw a
passenger train of 14 cars 50
