AN EXPERIMENT IN SUPPRESSING NEWS
i Portland Oregonian: Fayetteville, North Carolina, came
briefly before the country as the city in which an attempt
vas made to delete all crime news from a daily newspaper.
After two weeks of such experimentation the Fayetteville
Observer announces that it will resume the publication of
human delinquency, at the request of its readers. The exact
ratio of public sentiment on this issue was sixty to one. From
Ihis it may reasonably be inferred that many persons, pre
viously of the belief that crime news should not be published,
.found occasion to change their opinion.
The ostrich-like attitude of ignoring crime tends only to
foster public ignorance of the black possibilities of crime, and
such ignorance is perilous. You may ask any criminal, if op-

You put 50 or 60 youngsters in a room where a teacher

, Formerly Buch a rate of growth would be regarded as a
matter for unbounded enthusiasm. Today we are not whol
ly sure about it. Many of us would like to see a little more
attention to quality and a little less to quantity. China has
a population nearly four times as much as ours but that docs
not make it any better country. There is still plenty of room the National Hoard an one of the
for this country to develop, yet as the land is more and more
taken up, farms must cost more, which will tend to make
foodstuffs more expensive. This population growth is en

but it tells us to get busy and provide school houses and oth
er facilities to keep all tliis population up to the old Ameri

Recent reports from the automobile factories are that
they are running practically up to capacity. Some pessimists
have been thinking for some time that the automobile indus
try would soon reach its capacity, and be forced to slow
down, but the more cars are made, the more ueoole seem to
-Vant. Owing to the many poor roads and to the speed which j tJTJl''1 "or ""nothing

cars wear out fast. The mere replacement of such scrapped
machines is a tremendous business of itself. Also the out

! will demand more automobiles, and America has a long start

The annual county track and
field meet, in which all of the
schools of the county participate
each year, will be held on Friday,
May 22. as an attraction of the
Roseburg Strawberry carnival,
which is to take place on the
dates of May 21, 22, and 23. The
nlans lor the field meet have
been practically completed, and
at a meeting of the council Satur
day the reports indicated that the
event this year is to be the best
of any meet ever held in the
county.
The same general plan is tttlng
followed this year as in past
years, only a few modifications
being made.
The county Is divided Into nine
sections, and In each of these
sections elimination contests arj
held. Each school enters con
testants in the various events, and
at the sectional meets teams are
selected to represent each section.
These teams then meet In Rose
burg on the date set for the
county event, and the winners
are inflected according to the num
ber of points scored.
The sectional meets start on
May 1, and will all be held dur
ing the first part of May. The
sectional teams will then have an
opportunity to prepare for the
county contest the last of the
month.
Heretofore the annual declama
tion contest has been held on the
same day. aa the field meet, but
this year, the declamations will he
given on the 16th of May. This
Is being done because of the fact
that It Is difficult to hold tire
contest In the morning, as has
been done previously, and It la
thought that by putting thfm ln
the afternoon or evening, that a
better attendance will be secured.
There will be three sections,
one for high school, one for grade
school girls, and one for grade
j srhool hoys. These will meet at
anrerant places, and the three
contests will be staged simultan
eously. A new feature Is being Intro
duced this year, and will doubt
less grow In Importance In the
future. That Is a contest for glee
clubs, to he held at the same
time as th declamation contest.
Mrs. Ackert. the county srhool
superintendent. Is a great lover
of music, and Is anxious to see
more attention given music In the
county schools. She la encour
aging the organization of glee
clubs in the various schools, and
has arranged a contest and suit
able prizes, for this year.
The Roseburg schools will not
be allowed to compete against
outside schools, as they have the
great advantage of a large num
ber of singers from which to sel
ect. The local clubs will compete
among themselves, while clubs
from out of town will form an
other group.
The reoulrements are not to be
severe this year, but In the future
It Is expected to gor?rn contests
by a set of strict rules.
