ROSEBURG, OREGON, FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 1929
CHILD HEALTH DAY.
; Twenty national organizations, with an aggregate membcr-
shin of 10,000,000, are uniting to celebrate Child Health
' Day, on May 1. Local programs to bring this matter before
'. the public have been arranged in 30 states.
I There are 35,000,000 children in this country, and the
; fate of the nation depends on their welfare. School work is
; largely wasted, unless the children come up well and strong.
; A-ohild who is well educated, but is puny and feeble physic
; ally is poorly equipped for his start in the world.
'. The children are at an age when just a moderate amount
of" attention will do wonders for them. Not many have ser
; ioiis diseases yet, but they have troubles that can have ser-
i5ifs effects, by obstructing the development of their various
ergons. A little attention or some slight corrective treatment
or! Operation at this time, will take millions of these young
; stcrs who are suffering from some defect, and remove this
; obstacle to their proper growth and give them an equal
: ch'iln'ce in the world.
In that way a vast amount of unhappiness, poverty,
ar)d suffering can be averted. The condition of the mass of
the people can be raised to a far higher level.
One thing that will do a great deal to promote such
; child health, is a system for physical examination of children I
I in the schools. This ought to be the practice everywhere.
; There ought always to be some system for following up these
j children and ascertaining if they are getting proper treat
I rn'dnt for defects that have been discovered. If parents are
! nof able to afford such treatment, it will pay the community
i to contribute toward the same. When you remove the de
fecj that hinders a child's development, you turn an inef
fective worker into an efficient one and the community bene
." fits.
