"In this locality we are doing
eveiytliinR possible to encourano
dairymen to keep records and in
connection with our Slate Colleee
(and Smith-HuKhes lllfrh School I)e
parlment, we are now orpanizinR
a proup of dairymen who will keep
I accurate recordfi." This quotation
j is taken from a recent letter writ
: ten by a dairy boonter in Spokane
j County, WashinRtou.
j In the business world penerally
'there is very little sympathy lost
i jii the man who fails because he
1 refuses or doesn't know how to
' keep accurate and adequate records
lot his business. The question might
! well be asked, "Is the dairyman en
'tilled to any fliore consideration
I than tho business man if he fails
to make pood because he lacks the
necessary information that proper
records would reveal?"
The ordinary methods of book
keeping which concern themselves
with facts of income and ont-po.
) with an ultimate statement of profit
and loss, are business essentials
' but do not necessarily how the
' sources or reasons of profit or loss.
Cost accountinE Is the revealing
factor and is of utmost importance
to the dairyman If he know the
( sources of his losses and sains,
j The most essential factor is to
j know the productive capacity of
each cow in his herd. Many auth
! ot ities have stated that in average
' herd, one half of the cows could
. be eliminated and the actual net
j profits thereby Increased. This
clearly points to tho necessity of
; weighing and testing the milk from
each cow and properly recording
the results. The cow testing asso
ciations have worked out adequate
! rules and forms for doing this work,
i Next in importance is the feed
ing question which fs closely allied
to production. When the apparent
paradoxical condition exists that
one dairyman niust' Increase his
tood bill ij ofdr to increase his
profits and another must decrease
his feed bill to accomplish the Fame
, result, it plainly Indicates that to
explain it, the facta must be known.
A proper feeding record will show
these facts. Feeds of equal milk
producinK value vary greatly in
cost. Feeds of equal cost greatly
vary in milk producing value.
Right at this time there are some
sections of the Northwest where
many dairymen are short of feed
and are practically Btarvlng their
cows so far as feeding to get milk
is concerned. Some of these men
are saving a few dollars "between
hay and grass" only to lose in pro
duction lor the balance of the year.
Such conditions exist because thesfl
men have no previous records of -similar
experiences to help them
out.
The third Important factor Is to
test and keep records of the per
formance of all mechanical equip
ment. Know what the separator is
doing, if not in proper condition
it can readily lose its entire cost
every year in a 10-cow herd.
The length of these articles does
not permit greater discussion at
this time. These things are only
suggestions.
Records faithfully kept and stud
ied pay.
