ROSEBURG, OREGON, SATURDAY, APRIL 18, 1925.
PETTY STEALINGS
One of the common habits of travellers is to steal
(owels and other minor articles from hotels, railroad trains,
etc. The name of the place owning such property is com
monly stamped on ihe same, but that may promote the steal
ing habit, as tourists seem to like such marked articles as
souvenirs. The more expensive a place is, the more people
like to have it known they have been there, and the more
they would prize some little bit of room furniture showing
that fact. This steady disappearance of portions of their
equipment increases the cost of operating these services by
a considerable amount, which has to be paid for by the pub
lic. As it works out, the scrupulous folks who would be
ashamed to take anything that does not belong to them, have
Jo help pay for the purloinings of those who are more easy
going. One wonders what effect it must have on young peo
ple to see this disregard of the rights of others. If a boy
sees his parents running off with towels and such articles
from their hotel room, it is a temptation for him to think
that strict honesty has become obsolete. If a hungry man
stole a five cent apple from a fruit stand, he would be called
a thief. But when wealthy people take a towel worth a dol
lar, that is just a playful joke, showing their sense of humor
and smartness. If we want old fashioned honesty, we must
begin with these little things. Let us teach the young people
of Roseburg to respect the property of others, and that if
they get a single penny too much in change, they should give
it back. Petty stealings for souvenir purposes should not be
regarded as smart, but as evidence of unwillingness to pay a
fair price for the things we want.
The barring of the last issue of the Harvard Lampoon
from public sale because of its cartoon placing in a ridiculous
light the feat of Washington crossing the Delaware river is
mainly deplorable because of the source of the insult A stig
ma of that sort would occasion no surprise if it were to em
anate from a source notorious for anarchistic ideas or from
an institution of no recognized standing. Coming as it does
however, from the oldest university in the United States, an
tedating the founding of the republic by over 1 10 years, and
situated in close proximity to the city that bears the proud
title of the "Cradle of Liberty," the insult cannot fail to
produce widespread amazement. One cannot escape the con
viction, that the cartoon was issued without the previous
knowledge of the faculty and that it will bring the rebuke
which it so richly deserves.
o
' Within fifteen years there will not be enough Hoyal
.Chinook salmon to supply the fresh market locally unless
'commercial fishing and canning are curtailed, according to
dipt. A. E. Burghduff, secretary of the state game commis
sion, as reported by Oregon City Enterprise.
o
If rumors prove anything the state fish and game com
mission js due for a general shakeup. The opening of the
fish season has had its effect on the governor.
o
There's plenty of fellows standing around to tell the
other fellow how to do things, but the best way to get action
is to lead out yourself.
