Dangerou$ to Break
Bad News to filns
One of the most unpleasant du
ties In royal courts of the Middle
uses and later was the breuklng
of bad news lo Hit sovereign; not
only unpleasant, in fact, but actu
ally dangerous. Munarchs bad not
then arrived at the Btale of en
lightenment which they are alleged
to have reached nowadays. They
really believed themselves to be as
described In their titles God
appointed, Ever-Victorious, anil so
on. And, often being In point of
character either unmitigated phys
ical brutes or feeble-minded results
of lnbrccdiuii. they experienced tho
reiKtloiis of ill-bred children when
their vaultles or their purses were
touched. On receipt of bud news,
they felt like suiushlng something;
und the most obvious something
wioj the messenger. To dush out
the kneeling man's bruins with a
mine ur slush his head oft with a
sword wus a most convenient and
loglcul method of revenging ones
roytil self en the misty old world.
The fear of death Is the real
mother of Invention. The cour
tiers' messages are sometimes mas
terpiece of hinting.
Witness the method of Informing
a French king that his supposedly
Invincible navy hud been van
quished by the English under most
humiliating circuuistunces.
The court Jester took a cup of
wine and usked the king to drink
to ihe confusion of the cowardly
Engliso,
"Cowardly?" nsked the king.
"Yes," said the Jester. "They
have so proved themselves In a sea
buttle. For when your brave Nor
mans Jumped out of their ships Into
the sen, the English dured not follow
them." Ily F. It. Buckley In Ad

What One', Eyei Tell
We nre told that the eyes of the
Intellectual man are gray, and It
a fact that most men of genlm have
gray eyes. Itrown eyes are said to
express temperament rather than
Intellect.
Although brown eyes flash with
anger, light up with Joy, and chiume
swiftly Willi Jealousy, blue nnd
gray eyes can express greater sad
ness, says London Tit-Hits.
Green nnd black eyes are vtip
posed to be the most wicked. Reeky
Sharp's green eyes played an Im
portant part in her various con
quests. The "vamp" In modern fiction
usually possessed flashing eyes of
either green or black. Actually
there are no black eyes; dark
brown or dark gray eyej have the
appenrance of being black In ccr-1
tain lights.
Friendship With Nature
