I Five members of one family were
burned to death In a fire which
.destroyed a frame building here
this morning. The dead: H. H.
Hopps. 72; Mrs. H. H. Hopps. 65;
Vernon Hopps, 17; Ruth Hopps
13; Herman Hops, 10. The bodies
were burned beyond recognition.
The victims were apparently suf
focated before the fire.
Hopps came here two years ago
from Florence, Ore., where anoth
er daughter, Mrs. H. M. Peterson,
resides. The family came origin
ally from New York City.
Hopps worked until V ociock
last night at the Nicholson Phar
macy, doing some special decorat
ing in the new store.
Vernon was a sophomore in the
Mnrshfield high school. Appar
ently the family had roused as
four of the bodies were practically
together. The fifth was appar
ently burned in bed.
Property damage waa later
estimated at about $75,000 with
most of the losses covered by In
surance. The heaviest loses were:
