TROUBLES OF THE OWNER
The owner of a two family house was telling the other
day of his desire to find a tenant for the apartment which.
. ,he had to rent, and as is commonly remarked, he said he
' wanted a family without children. It was observed in reply,
that he did not seem to consider the fact that the world had
to be populated, and that the families with children had to
find homes somewhere. He was asked what such families
: were to do, if everyone took his point of view? To which this
' landlord replied, giving some of his experiences with pre-
vibus tenants who had had children. They certainly raised
' the mischief with his place. They had broken down a young
. tree on his front lawn which he had prized, and they had
made it a common habit to snap off the branches of his
shrubs. Also when he seeded down a piece of lawn they
would run across it and drag their carts and other things be
: hind them. They had dug holes in the driveway which he
had had carefully made. Inside the house, they had done
things like using roller skates on his nice hardwood floors.
You could hardly blame him, if he was rather bitter on fam
ilies with children. And to make the matter worse, when he
Complained to the parents of these destructive youngsters,
they remarked, "Well, you know boys must be boys."
It may be said that there are in Roscburg many families
having children who bring them up with more regard for
property. There ought to be some way by which such a care
ful family could obtain homes with less difficulty than they
; find in many places. But as long as so many families are
' careless, it is natural that rents should be high, and that the
family with children will often have difficulty in finding sat
'. isfactory homes. Families of this type should make an ef-
fort to own their own home, and then they will have a better
; idea of the need for disciplining these youngsters.
: : ' -
' The idea has long prevailed that the American Indians
; in this country were declining in population, and that this
romantic race would in due time become almost extinct. But
recent statistics show that they number some 316,000, which
- is 20,000 more than 10 years ago. Out of 54,000 Indian
families, some 44,000 occupy permanent homes. The old
. days when the Indian was a wanderer are passing. Out of
' these, 32,000 were farming for thomsolves, and so they are
; settling into the ways of white citizenship. Some feel that
; they are being pushed too rapidly, and there has been con-
troversy whether they should be permitted to carry on their
ceremonial dances. Some feel they should be required to give
. tip their own distinctive costumes and wear white styles ot
'. ilolhing. While it will be a mistake to force these descen
; dants of prehistoric" civilization too fast, yet the, picturesque
old Indian habits are not as a rule adapted to a modern white
man's country.

Ben Dorris, of Eugene, member of the state game com
mission, hns been ousted. No reason for his action in dis
missing Mr. Dorris has been given by Governor Pierce. I'n
til such time as the governor feels disposed to enlighten the
public why Mr. Dorris was fired it will be generally under
stood that things political had much to do with the dismis
sal. To be a crafty politician, and at the same time an ef
ficient public official, seems a necessary requisite to "play
ball" with the governor.
o
Since the birth of the Republic and before that Mas
sachusetts has been referred to as America's "Hub of Learn
ing." This naturally increases flic pride that Oregonians feel
in the victory won this week by the Oregon Agricultural
College debaters over their opponents of the Massachusetts
' Institute of Technology. Incidentally it should also dissipate
the idea still prevalent in some eastern centers that the west
is long on brawn and short on mental culture.
