ROSEBURG, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, APRIL IS, 1925.
OF TOO FREQUENT OCCURRENCE
Of too frequent occurrence in the world's happenings
Z facts are chronicled concerning various outrages on young
"girls perpetrated by men of mature age. Yesterday's dis-
patches told of a young girl at Indianapolis, Ind., who had
been enticed away from her home under the presumption
that a supposed friend, a man whom the young lady had
known quite well, had urgent business matters to discuss
Hwithlier. She met the fellow in his apartments, was plied
with liquor, and forced to submit to the beast's desires
d against her will. Following a few days orgy, during which
Utime the girl was kept under the influence of liquor, she
'Z finally regained her senses and was permitted to leave her
companion to purchase a part of her wardrobe that had dis-
appeared in her hasty movements of a few days previous.
Overcome by the disgrace thvust upon her the girl took
poison, from the effects of which she died.
i Her alleged debaucher has been arrested. He will
ZThave a hearing, and, considered more or less prominent, will
quite iiKeiy use an uie - strong arm meinoas at lus com
mand to override justice. At any rate, this is the logical con
delusion of the public in cases of this nature past precedents
being entirely too glaring for the general good of all con
deemed. Z ' If there is any crime that should be closely linked with
Z murder it is that of the designing beast that takes advantage
ZVPt Pure a"d innocent girlhood. Too many men apply their
f'talent" to this nefarious vocation. They look upon the op
posite sex with but one view to degrade and debauch and
feeem to revel in their clamorous efforts to accomplish their
fiendish desires. Many an unassuming girl, whose thoughts
knew no evil, has been thrown in the gutter and made an
"outcast by these human vultures.
ZZ Of all the young men taking a vacatign this year, none
will get more benefit from it than the, thousands who take "a
month's vacation nt Uncle Sam's expense." Uncle does not
profess to be altogether philanthropic about it. He mnin-
tains his summer training camps for good and strategic rea
sons, to keep alive a healthy spirit of-self-defense in the na
tion and to provide the rudiments of military training to
American youth who otherwise would never have had any
uch training. It is a benefit to the government and the
country to have a few score thousand young men undergoing
Z such a dose of instruction and discipline every summer. But
"It does them more good than it does Uncle Sam. This is not
laying that there is no hardship in the experience. The
work and exercise are hard just as it is hard paddling and
carrying a canoe, with its equipment, 40 miles a day in the
Canadian woods, or trailing big game over the mountains
with a gun. But there is joy and satisfacti6n in the achieve
ment and there are pleasant compensations along the wa
It is safe to say that the lads choosing this kind of a vaca
tion will come back to home and job far better in health, vig
or and spirit than nine-tenths of their friends who have pre
ferred the softer and more expensive kinds.
o
Roseburg is not only a healthy place geogrniftically, but
a healthy place financially. Witness the attestation of the
stability of her credit in the bids submitted last night for her
high school bond issue of $16",000. There were in all eleven
proposals, and all offered premiums ranging from 100.0 to
103.12.
The announcement of the Department of Agriculture
that the average income of the American farmer last year
was $()72 will hardly serve as a check on the heavy exodus of
wage earners from the farms to the cities, a condition so
generally deplored for a long time past by industrial exerts
and political economists.
