A BRIDE'S DIARY
A Lov Story of Today
By Idah McGlone Gibson
A FAtiE FlfrLM THE PAST
S .OPSlS
Cleo Madison was entertained a
tew friends, 'l'beywere extremely
modern iu their attitude toward
the conventionalities. So much
so that Cleo thought it would be
luu to read thfiu quotations trom
her grandmother diary. 1 ucy
were all thrilled at the Idea. .
"Good Lord." interrupted Con
nie when I started to read grand
mothers diary. "1 thought all
that diary business was just talk.
1 never kuew anybody kept sucn
a thing."
"Well, they did, my dear, ana
I'll prove u to sou. And I'm K
icg to hand you a laugh as welt.
".My grandfathers name was
Thomas for grandmother begins:
"iear 'thomas called mo an
elfin child' y enter as he carried
my hand to his lips in a mora
ardent muuuer than he has over
uotie beiore. I am uot sure that
1 did right to let him thus caress
me while using theuuusual words
of endearment. For, while 1 feel
that Thomas loves and respects
me, he has not yet asked me to
be his wife."
"Apprj sauce!" Connie exclaim
ed. "That's one of your own
brain-children. No girl in the
world, eea a girl of a half cen
tury ago, ever wrote such slush
as that and meant it."
"Now, Connie, you know I
couldn't have written it. That
goes without saying. Listen to
this:
"Thomas with a voice hoarse
with tender fueling held my hand,
which he said 'iay as quietly in
his as though It were some frail,
white lily resting on the surface
of a quiet pool."
"Suffering cats! Give me that
book.. It's priceless." Dale Cum
meriord stretched out a tanned,
muscular arm and tore graudmo-
'ther diary from me.
Dales hand is the hand or a
tennis player with long, brown,
sinewy fingers aud a wrist shows
boyish strength. You certainly
could never refer to it as a "trail
lily."
"Ciirls. It's true," Dale grinned,
after turning a page qr two, "It
ih positively indecent with what
it does not say. 1 Ur as though
your grandmother, Cleo, covered
her thoughts as well as her legs
with whue cotton pantalettes.
And even then sine only showed
them to the pure pages of her
diary."
"You'll have to read the rest
of it to me some other time,"
Marjorie Clements remarked.
"I've got to go. It's going to take
me at least fifteen minutes more j
1 than Ufual to rover up the rav
j ages of last night. I'm a wreck.
I And tliut yellow chiffon that Ma
1 rie seut home today weeds all the
, encouragement that 1 can give it. )
Jim told me the other day that I
', looked terrible in yeilow and I'm
going to try and prove that he's
j wrong in this as well as many
I other things that we always quar- ,
j re I about.
I "I'll see you tonight, Cleo, at
i Connie's. Paul Is going to get
home in time to take you?"
"Yes. He'll be here a little
j after nine."
i "You'll not he very early, then,
will you, Cleo?" Dale asked,
i "Not so Wry," 1 answered. As
I said this 1 felt myself blusiilng.
Dale noticed it, but I told her
; that it wus the 'tea' that had goue
j to my head.
Somebody shouted: "Will you
look at the time. We all must be
running." Aud they rushed
away.
After the girls had gone I went
to the mirror und my face crim
soned again with the mere
thought ot Pau-'s kisses.
I A delicious little thrill made
my flesh all creepy. 1 hadn't told
I the girls, but Paul aud 1 intend
to eloptt Just as soou as he gets
home.
1 crossed the room and picked
up graudmother's diary where
Dale had carelessly dropped It. As
I picked ft up, it fell open and
I read the words:
"I wonder if sometime my
granddaughter will look upon
these pages. If you should do
this, little dream granddaughter,
please be lenient with the im
modest thoughts I have put here.
Remember, no one will see this
iu my lifetime, but 1 had to put
down my strange and delicious
feelings when Thomas gave me
my first kiss."
I held the book in my hand for
a moment.
Grandmother thought she was
immodest wtien she said that her
heart fluttered and her body grew
hot and then cold when the man
who had just asked her to be his
wife "kissed her respectfully on
the Hps for the first time."
1 fell rather queer, for although
I loved Paul aud would marry
him if possible within the next
few days, yet ouly last uight 1
sat out in Chick Adams' cur at
the Country club and felt my
ttody grow hot aud cold at Chick's
kisses.
I wonder if grandmother really
missed anything.
