NEW ERA FOR AGRICULTURE
A new era lies ahead for agriculture because it now
commands the best economic thought of the business world
directed on its prime requirements of better distribution
and marketing, President V. C. Gordon of the State Bank
Division, American Bankers Association, declares in a com
munication to the thirteen thousand members of the division.
He seeks to enlist their interest in the work of improving the
marketing of farm products.
"The farmer today finds himself far removed from his
consumer-customer by a long line of intermediate agencies,
which often leave him in a position of disadvantage as an
individual producer," Mr. Gordon says. "It is, therefore,
not strange that he should seek to apply to agriculture those
principles of production and distribution found successful
in industry. His rightful ambition is to make, where feas
ible, a general application of successful business experience
to the marketing of agricultural products. Commanding the
best economic thought of the business world, agriculture un
doubtedly stands on the threshold of a new era. In lieu of
fantastic panaceas, agricultural welfare which after all is
the nation's welfare has need of a sane, long range pro
gram that is at once practical, constructive, and economic
ally sound."
He goes on to call attention to the "long view program
suggested for agricultural distribution" at Washington by
the Agricultural Conference, urging study of it.
o
A man who was visiting in another city the other day,
had a certain street pointed out to him. Here, he was told, it
was customary for many young girls to gather in the eve
ning, and the boys would come along in automobiles and pick
them up and give them rides. Most of these young people
.may mean no harm, though their parents may well question
their freedom of manners. Probably many of these girls, if
no one whom they knew came along, would go off with
strangers. Some of them may be getting into serious
trouble. The girl who wants a good standing in her home
town should be more careful as to her companions. If her
admirers do not respect her enough to come to her home,
their society is not probably desirable. Many parents are
letting Uicir young girls run wild, and it is about time for
such families to assert some power of control over them.
Los Angeles hotels are banishing the lobby squatters,"
boldly assailing an ancient and widespread pest. This type
of deadbeat in Los Angeles is said to be usually a tourist
who has an inexpensive room ' somewhere and eats in the
cafeterias, and spends much of his remaining time filling the
comfortable chairs in the lobbies of good hotels. The hotels
'.naturally want those chajrs for their own guests, who are
now crowded out by the parasitic squatters. So attendants
scan intruders with eagle eye and, when they become too
regular in their unprofitable patronage, slip them little
printed cards requesting them to loaf elsewhere. They usu
ally take the hint. It is a bold step, in a business that is tim
id about offending patrons, actual or prospective. But it is
amply justified, and will doubtless be imitated elsewhere.
There is a great demand for "pep." Schools and col
leges hold "pep meetings" to create enthusiasm for athletic
teams. Business organizations hold "pep dinners" to create
backing for their workers. The air is fulL,of the promotion
spirit in behalf of all kinds of activities, mostcf them useful.
,This power to secure enthusiasm and support is a kind of in
tangible thing, and many earnest people can't seem to ac
quire it. It takes a certain kind of smiling confidence. The
person who would create "pep" for any movement needs a
clear head so that he can state conditions lucidly and plan
reasonable action. Then he must throw himself into his
movement without fear of failure.
o
The man who has made a failure of life knows tjiut an
honest man cannot succeed, and by the same reasoning pow
ers thinks that a man who has succeeded must be dishonest.
Ixioks like it is going to bo a busy year pol it irally.

GOOD EVENING FOLKS
After a delightful
Easter Sunday when
You feel at peace
With the world and
You trip lightly
Down to the sanctum
All hopped up for
A good week's work
And you're hummin'
A little tune as
You open up the mall
It's dern disgustin'
To pick up a postcard
Written In a scrawled
Hand like the footprints
Of an intoxicated hen
Which starts out and
Ends Jike this:
"Say, "don't it jar you
To see such a wiseacre
As ed. of Prune Pickin's
Use such language
As he does In his
Indecent Insinuations
About girls and his
Display of his desire
To swear in his colyum
By using such words
As make the paper
Unfit for children
Of decent families
To read Give us
A rest from such
Co ly urns Peter Pan."
Well, well, well
Such Is life out
Here amid the
Tall and uncut
But again we repeat
There's no law
Compellln' folks
To read our colyum
And besides if ever'body
Quit read in' It
We wouldn't hafta
Write it anymore
And then we could
Go fish in'

regulations today governing the
