In an automobile near Manila, said

promised to many Lieutenant
Thompson if he would ronton from
tho army. Thompson wrote out
bin resignation, then, according; to
friends, hhe had a change of
heart and changed her mind.
Just before the shooting Miss
Burleigh participated in a theatri
cal Hponsored by the army and
navy club. Thompson objected to
her participation in the perform
ance, hut she disregarded hia pro
test. When Miss iturletoh made
known her intention not to mar
ry Lieutenant Thompson, has not
been revealed.
A letter of resignation from the
army written by Thompson, now
held for court martial on a charge
of first degree murder, waa found
in his effects today under date of
April 3. The lieutenant said ho
was resigninR on account of In
sufficient pay. Hrlnadler General
Charles J. Symmonds will preside
at the court martial. If the pro
ceedings result in a conviction it
must be . reviewed by President
Coolldge.
