Founded In 1865, as a smalt mis
sion in the East End of London,
the organization Is now sixty years
of ape. In spite of this short span
of existence. The Army Flag now
flies in eighty countries and col
onies, and its religious and social
service activities are conducted in
fifty-five languages and dialects.
The missionary work, maintained
almost entirety by an annual week
of self-denial on the part of Salva
tionists throughout the world, oc
curs this year in the Western Ter
ritory of the Vnlted States from
April 5th to 12th, represents one of
the greatest advances, of the year.
I i his work Is now flourishing in 4,
i 174 centers, in ten widely separated
fields of activity, under the super
vision of 2,750 commissioned offic
ers who have dedicated their lives
to consecrated work far from their
own homes. In addition to the
evangelical work. The Army pro
gram includes Indust rial Schools
for native boys and girls, homes for
leperu and tubnrculars, hospitals,
shelters, food depots, prisoner-aid
service, emergency refiVf stations,
rescue work among native girls,
agricultural schools and a score of
other social service and educational
activities.
The largest Army missionary
program is carried on in India,
where there are 1.3S1 commission
ed officers, many of them of
American origin, at work in 3,334
centers Jn all parts of that vast
country, which in itself has been
divided into five complete territor
ies for purposes of administration.
Widespread floods in South India
during the year also in China
taxes all the resources of the offi
cers and called for large grants of
money from the International Self
Denial Fund.
The next largest field Is Japan,
where there are 292 offfcers in 120
centers of activity, and then comes
! China, with 218 officers In 62 cen
ters. j The other fields are represented
' in the report as follows; Ceylon,
i 167 officers in 157 centers; South
i Africa, 1n5 officers In 150 tamers;
South America, IIS officers in 62
centers; Nigeria, 33 officers in 22
(centers; and Kenya, in Central
j Africa, 10 officers in seven centers,
j In all these fields the commis
.sloned officers are assisted by large
J numbers of natives non-commissioned
officers who are especially
trained for the work.

depends on it. Take no subbtitute.

WASHINGTON. April 7 While
pledging justice by the govern
oient in its ivlatiun3 with busi
ness, President Coolidge looks to
the management of industry as
mainly responsible for the con
duct of industry.
"There ought to be a more
candid understanding between the
government and ail industrial ef
torts," he said in an address to
the national association of cot
ton manufacturers last night.
"Lue to the keenness of compe
tition and the urgent dvslre tor
success, it is necessary to main
tain the most constant watctilul
ness on the part of the govern
ment to insure the enforcement
of law, but on the Oliver band the
management there should like
wise be the same vlgilunce to in
sure the observance of law."
President Coolidge jusliiied the
tariff declaring that the "tower
ing stature of our industrial
structure as we see it today is
the best, is indeed the complete
vindication of this policy."
Reviewing conditions in the
cotton industry, Mr. Coolidge
pledged lull assistance of th tu
eral goyeruuvent in fighting the
ooll wee. il and endorsed the
suggestion ror a treaty of co
operation among the cotton pro
ducing states as a means of elim
inating this destructive pest.
