START ROAD WORK
IN TILLER VICINITY
The county road crew left this
morning for Milo to apend several
days worklwr on the road between
Mllo and Tiller. The county In us
ing this crew, in which there are
a number of the county prisoner,
to do heavy rock work In several
sec tions of I ho county. They re
cently did the rouuh (Trading on
the road around tho base of Mt.
Nebn, the cost to the county and
city beiiiR only about half of the
estimated nmount. They have also
completed the task of blo-win off
the rock point Just east of Mid
rose. There are several narrow
places on tlia road above Mllo
where the rock will be blown out to
ill foul a wider roadbed.
GERMAN SOLDIERS
DROWNED IN RIVER

DET.MOLD, Germany, March 31.
Fifty members of the German
Kelchswehr were drowned in the
river Wese'r this morning when a
bridge being constructed by pio
neers, In connection with the
lleichswehr maneuvers collapsed.
The victims were part of a column
marching in full field equipment
which attempted to uwe tho tem
porary structure.
At 2 o'clock this afternoon 62
privutes ai ill were unaccounted
for after the pontoon brldire dis
aster although It is assumed that
many were rescued and are being
cared for In nearby villages.
Tiie pontoon bridge which fail
ed to sustain the marchilig col
umn of infantry, was constructed
over th upper W'oser nt the point
where It joins the rivers Werra
arid Fulda, between the towns of
ilausberg and Vt'crthelm.
Among the missing Is ono of

been due to the overloading of

AGED SOLDIER
PASSES AWAY
Denjamln Streit, who has made
his borne in West Itoseburg for the
past tw elve years, died at his home
on Wharton avenue, at a: 45 o'clock
Monday evening.
Mr. Streit was the father of Mrs.
T. W, lX'laney, George M. Hess and
Frank Streit, of this city. He also
has two daughters In the east, Mrs.
! E. W. Smith, of St. Paul, and Mrs.
I Tillle Zuehlke, of Minneapolis.
Minnesota. The deceased was Sfj
years and IS days old at the time of
his death. Mr. Streit has been a
member of the Methodist Episcopal
church for some 4D years or mure,
and lived a conscientious Christian
life, honored nnd respected by all
who knew him.
The funeral services will be held
at the I mlertaklng Parlvrs, Wed
nesJuy afternoon. Interment will be
held al the Masonic cemetery.
