P. M. of April 14, 1925. receive at
his office In the City of Koseburg,
Douglas County, Oregon, sealed
bids for the purchase of negotiable
serial coupon bonds of School
District No. 4 In Douglas County,
Oregon, In the sum of $165,000.00.
Said bonds will be in denomina
tions of $1,000.00 each, dated May
. 1, 1925, and maturing as follows:

1st of each and every year 'there

Phil Huntington and little son,
Collls, came over on horseback
last Sunday afternoon, for a short
visit with Phil's Uncle John and
Aunt Emma Miller. Phil is now
located at Marshfleld, and doing
fine. He and family were enter
tained at a fine birthday dinner on
Sunday, at the home of Al Smith,
father of Mrs. Phil Huntington,
and all had a very fine time.
Jack Roach, the genial deputy
assessor from Drain, was attend
ing to business here this week.
Mrs. Arthur Williams and Mrs.
Lee Allen, went to Oakland on
Tuesday evening to the Hard times
party given by the Rebekahs. They
report lots of fun.
The young people of Hayhurst
gave a dance at the hall last Sat
urday night.
Miss Agnes Pitchford, Juvenile
Officer and Mrs. Ellen Post.
County Health Nurse, were attend
ing to business bere on Wednes
day. Jay Huntington and family were
visiting relatives here last Sunday.
Mr. Warner Laird, had the mis
fortune to cut one of his toes quite
Dadly one day last week. He was
taken to Dr. McKaig In Yoncalla,
who fixed him up in such good
shape, that he ia recovering nice
ly. While -rummaging among some
old letters in search of data in re
gard to an event of history, we
ran across the enclosed bit of In
teresting history. It Is the first
time we ever knew that Yoncalla
ever aspired to having the Agricul
tural College located there. The
following Is an exact copy of tho
paper referred to:

L. Applegate, citizens of Jackson
county. State of Oregon, having an
interest In Yoncalla Institute in
Yoncalla, Umpqua County, State of
Oregon, do hereby declare their
consent and agree to donate all
their interest In the. same to the
Commissioners to locate the Agrl
'cultural College at Yoncalla, and
pledge themselves to convey to
said Commissioners, legally and
bonafide, all our said Interest in
I the property known as The Yon
calla Institute; and at the same
time, relinquish unto the said
Commissioners all our authority
over the property, and government
of the said Yoncalla Institute.
This, the 11th day of April, in
the year of our Lord, one thou
sand eight hundred and sixty

Explanation:
The building referred to, and
known as "Yoncalla Institute,"
was built by subscriptions, most
ly solicited by Llah Applegate, and
by him named "Yoncalla Insti
tute." It stood for a number of years,
and ws finally torn down, and a
new school erected In the town of
Yoncalla. Ilinger Herman, Jesse
Applegate, Dan Applegate, and a
number of prominent men, taught
school In tho old "Institute."

Little Agnes Humlston, seven
year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
E. E. Humiston of Rainbow addi
tion No. 1 died at the family res
idence, March 24 at 1 o'clock a. m.
The little girl had been 111 since
January 20, when she was taken
down with scarlet fever.
The funeral was held at Gardi
ner, Wednesday, and was private.
Mr. and Mrs. Humlston have the
sympathy of the community in

MOOSE CAUSES DELAY
-TO PAS8ENGER TRAIN
Disregarding continued blasts of
the train whistle and loping along
at an easy clip, one of the four
moose which several years ago
were placed In the state game ref
uge at Kroll, Monday morning
caused a delay of some 20 minutes
In arrival of the herlhbound pas
senger train. Passengers and mem
bers of the crew were given some
free and pleasing entertainment by
the antics of the animal. After run
ning along ahead of the train for
more than a mile between Kroll
and Booth stations, the moose,
which was without horns, going at
an easy gait, went into a marsh,
easily leaped the right-of-way
fence of the S. P. company, in a
graceful manner, and got Into the
woods on the high ground. The resi
dents of the section had been look
ing for the animal, which badnot

Itarothy Elllugson, confessed mat
ricide, refused in a conference
with Judge Harold Louderback,
the trial judge today, to enter a
plua of guilty to a murder charge
In any degree. The conference was
arranged by the defense la an ef
fort to bring the trial to an immed
iate Conclusion.
The prosecution has 'held that
the girl must plead guilty to a
murder charge before It will con
sent to bait the case.

Dorothy Elllngson, K-year-old mat
ricide, today gratefully accepted a
respite In the ordeal she has been
undergoing In the proceedings to
obtain a jury which will deter
mine her fate.
The jury of nine men and three
women was sworn in yesterday,
then allowed to go to their home.
The girl returned to her cell in the
county jail is not the same girl
who entered there almost two
months ago, but a chastened, ap
parently almost broken girl whose
frequent collapses In court have
given an entirely different aspect
to her legal status.
