CAUSE MINISTER'S
DEATH IS PROBED
fAMOcUtm) Pita Lewd Wire.)
HOT SPRINGS, S. D., March
24. An investigation Into the life
of Reverend Robert K. Tarleton
to determine a motive for tho
death of the clergyman, who died
of poisoning, was instituted by
authorities today after surveying
testimony which discounted any
theory or suicide.
Chemists at the state university
at Vermillion analyzed the pas
tor's stomach after an autopsy
fulled to reveal a trace of heart
diicasn by which It was believed
at first that be died and then
that poison caused bis death.
A survey of the minister's life
Indicated he had no known ene
mies, was popular In his commun
ity and successful in bis work.
He was found dead in his gar
age January liji .
GIRL WHO SHOT
MOTHER WANTS
JURY OF MEN
(Continued from paue 1.)
against hanging.
A California law forbids hanging
persons under 18 years. Californ
ia citizens have always opposed
the hanging of women of any age.
When the Jury in completed de.
fnse counsel will advance the plea
that Miss Kllingson Is suffering
from a mental condition bordering
on Insanity. The girl has con
fessed to the killing. She has told
of the quarrel with her mother ov
ir new dresses and undesirable ac
quaintances to whom her mother
objected, of the argument which
led to the fatal shot and of taking
all the money In the house and
walking away over her dead par
ent's body to renew the compan
ionship of men friends.
Before Dorothy killed her moth
er the Kllingson home Mood divid
ed because of the daughter's activ
ities. Her father had left after a
disagreement with her mother
when Kllingson objected to the
hours and company the girl was
keeping. Mrs. iKIlingson defended
her daughter. His wife dead, his
daughter In jail, the father was in
court yesterday and caressed his
clrl when she was led In for trial.
Beside him stood his son. After
Miss Ellingson'a arrest he refused
to permit her to attend the funer
al of her mother, but he now
hopes for some mitigating circum
stances which may save his daugh
ter from a felon's cell.
