YOUTH'S VIEWPOINT
Many fears are expressed by the older people that mod
ern youth has drifted away from the old standards. In try
ing to get at the heart of those points w here the young peo
ple differ from those who went before, considerable weight
should be placed on their tendency to take life lightly. Like
many other ideas, this attitude came largely from the war.
" There was a tendency for these young men to go to the front
with the feeling, or at least giving the Impression that they
felt, that it did not matter very much whether they returned
or not. Many of them felt more fear than they admitted,
but still one gets the impression that they took their terrific
experience rather lightly. They had to, if they were not to
be overwhelmed by it. Returning after the war, they com
municated that point of view. The young folks feel that the
older ones take life too seriously, that they worry too much,
and are not willing to take things as they come and accept
whatever may happen to them cheerfully. Their favorite
phrase is, "It's all in the game." Insofar as this sentiment
lead these young folks to treat life superficially, to fail to
realize its great issues, to skate over the surface of tilings m
a frivolous way, it is a harmful influence. But on the whole,
it may be considered to be a good spirit. People that have
that point of view will not hesitate and dawdle so long about;
the things they ought to do. They will get into trouble at
times from flirting with danger of nil kinds. Hut they
will do their work with a splendid spirit of courage and de
termination, and will not be held back by the foolish fears
that went before them. These young folks will be running
( the country in a few years, and one looks to see many useful
changes as that point of view becomes more influential.
o
Almost every day one reads in the newspapers of some
man who came frpm very humble and obscure 'beginnings,
who has climbed to a large measure of success. One of the
most recent of such examples is found in Everett Sanders,
of Indiana, the new secretary to the president. lie, like
many other distinguished men, was born in a log cabin, and
' worked as a farm laborer in early youth. Every such in
stance should be a beacon of encouragement to the poor boy,
as it shows him the pathway which lies open before every
one born on American soil. Not many have the ability to at
tain the more conspicuous successes, but the boy who works
hard and covets knowledge usually goes far beyond what his
early associates expect.
o ',
A Philadelphia court recently sentenced two boys to a
aily spanking for 47 days, as a penalty for robbery of a
i.ardware store. The boys had to submit to one spanking for
each dollar they cost their fathers. Tender hearted people
may sympathize With those kids, but their sufferings under
47 spankings would be infinitely less than the distress that
would come to them and their friends if they go on the way
they have begun. A little physical pain now will save in
calculable sorrow later. Cut if they repent, as they prob
l.bly will long before those spankings re ended, the parents
may well interpret the penalty generously.
o
K legislation favored by the American Legion In Kan
sas goes through, instruction in the American constitution,
history, and civics would be given all the way from the
-lowest grades of school to graduation from the high school.
-These are vital subjects. A boy may know every rule in
-arithmetic and how to spell every word, but if he quits
- school without knowing his duties as a citizen and without a
.- desire to inform those duties, his education is faulty. Hook
. knowledge is a good thing, but a purpose to co-oerate in
waking a good country and community is quite as essential.

not interfere with other sets even in the same building.
Come In and describe your piano, and let us explain the Globe.
We will demonstrate in comparison with any other Radio set
made.
