COOLIDGE SILENCE
The famous reserve in conversation which is character
istic of President Coolidge, raises the question whether this
Is a trait that other people could cutivate to advantage. It
J& evidently not merely an unconscipus habit with Mr. (Jool-
Jdge, but he seems to be convinced that the majority of peo
ple talk too much, and that it would be for their advantage
o say less, and to listen and think and read a good deal.
Miore. So it could be asked in a general way whether as a
Xule the American people talk too much? Many people would
lie better off if they talked a little more. They give an in
iiression of cold and unfriendly reserve, which makes it
&cm as if they were haughty and proud and not interested
in other people. On the other hand, a multitude of people
Xre constantly pouring forth a stream of words. They never
feem happy unless they are giving out this flow of language.
Dne sees them approaching with distaste, as they inter
rupt work and it is hard to get rid of them. It is & difficult
Jfiatter to draw the golden mean between an excess of si
lence and such a superfluity of conversation. It is true,
however, that still waters run deep, and if a person wants to
do the highest type of work, he cannot spend any large
amount of time in aimless talk. Nevertheless, talk is the ve
hicle of communication, and it is by communication that in
telligence is distributed, and that people are organized and
liiduced to accomplish things. What is needed is for the shal
low talkers to curb their loquacity, while the taciturn folks
should open up and communicate their stores of wisdom to
Ihe world. ' Cut many statesmen and politicians might well
imitate the Coolidge silence, and give their attention to win
ning popular support by efficient service rather than by
tlieir voluble talk.
" O-
I ." Strange, indeed, what some people will do to gain
Wealth. In the Shepherd case at Chicago we have an ex
it anple of circumstances that led to the death of a promising
young man who had fallen heir to an immense fortune. The
death of young McClintock had been carefully planned, ac
cording to information now in the hands of officers who
have been ferreting out the details of the horrible crime and
William D. Shepherd has been charged with the crime ot
ifcjsoning the boy that he might get possession of his large
rgrjune. Millions were involved, all of which fell to Shep
'aied. But, as always is the case, "murder will out," and the
perpetrator of the deed is now tangled in the meshes of the
law- and will quite likely be shorn of the mask that has hid
Lun a guilty conscience and stripped of his ill gotten gains,
brought about by the wilf ull murder he had planned and ear
ned out. Nothing pays a trigger dividend than honesty
wnciher small or large returns are involved.
