ROSEBURG, OREFON, SATURDAY, MARCH 14,
"HESD"El5THii WAV
1025
A Washington dispatch of today announces that the in
terstate commerce commission is soon to hear applications
from northwestern railroads for permission to reduce their
ihrotigh passenger rates from mid-western terminals to the
Tacific coast. This means chiefly that the roads are getting
ready to bring another big batch of homeseekers to this re
gion this spring. Incidentally it should and doubtless will
stimulate every wide-awake western community in its
work of augmenting its population with permanent and in
dustrious settlers the kind that contribute materially to mu
tual prosperity and general advancement Roseburg should
cot lag behind in efforts to secure its share of the forthcom
ing influx of these desirable citizens. The community's
agent is the commercial club. It must have the moral and
financial support of every citizen who has the welfare of
the city at heart and is desirous of seeing it forge ahead. If
you are not a member of the club now, become one without
further delay and do your share toward keeping Roseburg
apace with other Oregon communities.
o
Z Gov. "Al" Smith of New York, speaking to 1200 news
boys recently, told them that the fact that a boy is born poor
does not hurt his chances. He also asked them what im
provement they had recorded in the year that had passed,
and he told them they must prepare for their future, and
they unanimously pledged themselves to do it. Wonder
where those 1200 boys will be 12 or 24 years from now? It
is a safe guess that a very good proportion of them will be
holding down important jobs. They are learning how to ov
ercome difficulties and endure hardships, lessons which
many sons of the well to do never learn. . ,

Mrs. Herbert Sheets, of Quinton, New Jersey, who with
her husband recently celebrated a 62nd wedding anniversary
is a noted cook, and has prepared 65,000 meals on her cook
stove. To some of our highfliers, it seems a distressing task
"to" "took a single meal. A good cook has a sense of triumph
in mastering difficulties, a sense of power obtained from the
results of experience, a feeling of pleasant familiarity with
chemical and mechanical forces. Mrs. Sheets is no doubt
just as happy in producing one of her triumphs, as the golf
tVnd tennis champions are in delivering their astute and deli
cately manipulated strokes.
o
Col. Theodore Roosevelt told the American Legion in
a Washington's birthday address, that there are too many
'people who think the country owes them something. He
could have gone on to show how many there are that are
seeking for some form of special favor from their country,
state, or city, but those who offer service and are worrying
for fear they are not paying the debt they owe, are far less
numerous. The people who are trying to collect the debt
they think the government owes them, are no more popular
than other debt collectors, and in many cases the bill they
present is not correct.
