The banquet tables were all

at 7:30 p. m. Lenten service Fri
day evening at 7:30 and Wednes
day morning at 9:00 a. ru. The
word Lent is derived from an old
Saxon word, meaning Spring Ume,
and the fast before Easter came to
be known as the Lenten or Spring
fast A period of abstlnance and
fasting before Easter was observ
ed in the earliest days of Chris
tianity. Trenalus, who lived but
ninety years from the death of St
John, tells us that such a fast was
observed in his time and in that of
his predecessor. At first the time
of the Lenten observance varied in
different churches and among dif
ferent individuals, although all
agreed in the necessity of thus
commemorating in some way, their
Lord's sufferings and death. At
length, however, its duration was
fixed at forty days, which has
since, through all the Intervening
centuries, continued to be the uni
form custom of the church. The
number forty seems very anciently
to have been appointed to seasons
of repentance and taBtlng. "This
quadragesimal number," says Sty
Ambrose, In his 36th sermon "is '
not constituted of men, but conse-f
crated from God." For this term of
years were the children of Israel
disciplined In the wilderness, to
prepare them for the promised
land. For forty days did Moses fust
on the Mount, Elijah In the wilder-,
ness, and the Ninevites when they ,
would avert the Judgments prophe-,
sled by Jonah. It was this length
of time that our Lord Himself was ,
pleased to fast during His tempta-;
tion in the deBert and from his
example was this period probably
fixed, "that", as St. Augustine
says, "we might as far as we are
able, conform to Christ' practice,
and suffer with Him here, that we
may reign with Him hereafter."

Always the Same!
THERE are no off seasons for GENERAL. It always is the samel
Users of GENERAL have no fear of a lowering of quality. There
is no "fiddling about" with GENERAL'S specifications. Before
GENERAL was offered to motorists the plan by which it is made was
worked out scientifically. It provided for the highest possible type
of gasoline for use, the year around, in automobile motors on the
Pacific Coast.
The first gallon of CENERAL sold for automobile use was made
according to that plan and every gallon sold since has been as nearly
like it as one pea is like another.
Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter, GENERAL'S high quality never
changes. It started good, stays good always is the samel
