ROSEBURG, OREGON. FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 1925.
THE NEED FOR MACHINERY
' Many observers are asking where our diggers and shov-
'lers and all others who perform muscular tasks are coming;
'rrm, in these times when the majority of the young; men
trc fitting themselves for "white collar jobs," Unskilled la
bor for the rougher manual tasks is not going to be as abund
ant in. the future as in the past. It will demand better treat
ment, more regular employment, and higher pay. But the
rewards for such labor can not get much beyond a certain
point, without stimulating the tendency to create a new ma
chinery to perform such tasks. If the labor cost of rough
work doubles, you incite thousands of bright and ingenious
men to study out mechanical contrivances by which some
machine can do the work of several people. Perhaps the
next important development in our industrial history, will be
some increase of the work that is being done by machinery,
to make up for the shortage and expense of unskilled labor.
"Such a development would be a blessing to the country, be
cause whenever costs are saved in that way, the money of
the people can go into other things and employ more help in
, such directions. Such a development justifies the ambition
of the unskilled laborer who tries to become a skilled one, as
"it opens new opportunities for employment of his newly ac
quired power. But equipment of machinery costs a great
. deal of money. It can not take place on a big scale unless
the country has a large reserve of capital which is ready to
finance any concern that wants to substitute machine power
for hand work. Every family that saves money and invests
. it in good banks or other sound securities, promotes this de
velopment, and helps on the day when the daily necessaries
will cost less, owing to enlarged use of machine power.
