black scurf. The presence of this
black scurf Is easily detected, as ,
It is carried entirely on the out- '
side ot the potato. It has much
the same appearance as smalt
piytlcles of black dirt, but un
like the dirt can not be washed
of. The fortunate thing about
this disease is that It may be con
trolled to the point where It does
no great damage by the use ot the
Corrosive Sublimate treatment.
The more destructive potato dis
eases such as wilt, mosaic, black
leg and curly dwarf, can not be
controlled by Beed treatment.
The Corrosive Sublimate (Merc.
Chloride) treatment controls both
scab and Rhlxoctlnla. The for
malin treatment Is effective only
for scab and should not ho used.
Corrosive Sublimate is a poison
ous chemical which may be
bought at the drug store In a
white crystallne or powdered
form. The treatment solution
must be handled in stone or In
wooden containers. Do not use
metal vessels. A stork solution
Is prepared by thoroughly dissolv
ing 4 ounces of Corrosive Subli
mate in one gallon of hot water.
Put one gallon of this stock so
lution Into the wooden treating
barrel or through and add 29
gallons of water. This makes the
(.tandard strength treating solu
tion 4 ounces to 30 gallons of
water used.
The uncut potatoes should be
treated in this solution for 11 to
2 hpurs, nnless the sprouts are
started.' In whleh case the treat
ment should not extend over one
hour.
