of the Unipqua National forest to
all grade school teachers of the
county, the rules of the contest are
laid down.
President Coolidge Is Issuing s

and sixth prizes, the - choice ot
j similar unframed pictures.
L The posters entered In the con
"test are to portray any one of
the purposes for which the Ka-
' Clonal, forests were created, .as for
est protection, reforestation, utili
sation pf timber resources, recrea
tion, preservation ot wild life, oi
grazing of domestic stock. - The
idea may be expressed by use of
drawings, paintings, cartoons, clip
ping.-), or use of words. Cut-out
pictures pasted on cardboard por
traying any one ot the purposes
enumerated will be acceptable.
The teachers of the county are
being given full Instructions re

fore April 22, aud will be Judged
on Saturday, May 2. The prizes will
become the property ot'the school
from which the winning posters
are submitted. The prizes will be
on exhibition during Forest Week
Mrs. L'dlth Ackert, county school
superintendent, has endorsed the
campaign, and urges the school of
the county to participate.
' 'Since Douglas county has one-
f if I b of the standing timber of the
state of Oregon, it Is very fitting
that we should assist in thin cam
paign," Mrs. Acker says. .
Hht expresses a desire to see
every school represented in the
contest, not only because the pic
Isires vlll be a desirable ornament
for any school room, but in order
that the children may be trained
to guard the forests against the
great enemy, fire.
City School Superintendent
Hamm has also endorsed the con.
test in the following letter sent
to all grade school principals:
"As usual we .are to observe
one week during the year In
study of our timber wealth. The
dates from April 2T to May 3
have been set a,sid as American
Forest Week.
"The protectors of our nearby
woods wish to arouse an Interest
in conservation through the me

now proposes to widen the rock,
cut a short distance east from
Melrose, and to eliminate that
dangerous piece of roadway. At
present the vision of a driver Is
obscured except for a few feet
ahead, and as the cut comes on
a bad turn, a number of serious
accldenta have occurred and more
are feared unless something Is
done. The court proposes to olow
off (he point which dbstructs the
vision, aud to materially widen
the road, doing away with the
short turn. .
The county-has round that by
employing prisoners In road work
that projects can be completed at
a smalt cost. The Mount Nebo
road, which Is now being com
pleted, will cost Only about one
half the original estimate, and Is
a fine piece of work. All of .the
rough grading has been practic
ally completed, and as soon as the
surfacing can be done the road
will be ready for travel. Prison
ous confined to the county jail
for misdemeanors have been em
ployed, being given a specified
time off their sentence for tbolr
work, which Is an Incentive to
them to do good work. The crew
has done excellent work, every
ueuUier applying himself to the
Job.
As a result of this plan the
Mount Nebo road will be listed
as one of the cheapest pieces of
construction work the county has
completed in recent years, con
sidering the nature of the ground
upon which the road bed was
built. Practically bait ot the
road has been cut through solid
rock, while it ail lies along the
side of the hill. It affords an
outlet for the residents of Ump
qua Park Addition, and opens up
that section. The road Is very
scenic, following, as It does, along
tho river, and no doubt will be
a pupular drive during the sum
mer months.
It surely costs a lot to live and
the trouble is you don't always get
your money's worth at that. Try
