First Prize to Grand Prize Winner, and $5 in Gold, $50 Gold Watch
(Boys or Girls)
Watch Donated by Dr. B. R. Shoemaker and Lloyd L. Crocker.
Five dollars in gold will be awarded to each champion speller of the fifth,
sixth, seventh ar.d eighth grades of each of the Benson, Rose and Fullerton
schools at the grand contest. s

Rules and Regulations, Kiwanis Spelling Contest
Each elementary school In Roseburg shall send three champion
spellers from each of Its fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades to
compete for the championship of the city. The championship oral
contest will be held at the high school auditorium on Kriday night,
April 3, at 7:30 o'clock. The selection of the three best spellers from
each elementary grade above named will be left to the teachers of
the various grades, who shall conduct elimination contests.
At the championship contest the champion speller of the three
in each of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades of each of the -three
schools, the Benson, Ross and.Fullerton will be awarded (5 in
gold. .
The grand prize winner, or champion of the entire contest, will
receive a 6d0 gold watch, either boys' or girls' to be selected by the
winner, and $5 In gold. -
A committee of three Roseburq Rotarlans will act as judqes for
the spelling contest and all questions concerning the 'spelling of
words shall be decided by these three judges.
The sources of words to be used in the championship contest will
be from the Buckingham Extension of the Ayres Spelling Scale as
printed in The Roseburg News-Review and distributed to the various
grades prior to the contest; and the present textbook, Book 2 of the
New World Speller for the fifth and sixth grades and Book 3 for the
ceventh and eighth grades. A supplementary list will be prepared by
the superintendent for use in the event the ffbove list of words is
exhausted.
When a word Is given out to a contestant he shall be adjudged
to have failed unless he immediately pronounces It, spells it correctly
at first attempt and if necessary indicates capitals. Permission is
given to repeat a letter or letters once, provided no change Is made,
if a word is not understood by a contestant when it Is first pronounced
it shall be repeated, defined or used In a sentence before the contes
tant shall be adjudged to have failed.
