ROSEBURG, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 192S.
ALBANY DAILY NEWSPAPERS CONSOLIDATE
Press dispatches yesterday told of the consolidation of
the two daily newspapers published at Albany, Oregon, the
Democrat and the Herald. This is a sensible conclusion on
. the part of the owners of the two papers and should have
been accomplished long ago.
Nn rirv of less than fifteen thousand people can sup-
Tr Hnilv new.snaoers with anv dceree of success. It
has been attempted time and again in cities the size of Al
bany and Roseburg and with but one result, either consolida
tion or suspension of one or the other. The field is not large
enough to warrant the publication of two dailies at Albany
any more than it is in Roseburg. Business does not justify
such condition, and it was for this reason that the two pa
pers at Albany decided to consolidate.

another newspaper where the neia is aireaay uequaieiv
covered. They delight in spending me oiner itnow s money
and paint glowing pictures of what could be done with their
"talents" at the helm of a daily publication, never taking in
to consideration the fact that it takes years of hard, con
scientious endeavor to build a newspaper of any worth. Al
bany will now have a real newspaper. Its owners can afford
' to give their patrons better service in many ways. Their
efforts will be concentrated in one instead of two daily pa
pers and will bring about a good metropolitan publication.
Like the News-Review, the owners will quite likely , add a
leased wire service to their news gathering agency and
strengthen their local field to a greater range, giving their
readers a far better and more comprehensive service than is
possible to otherwise accomplish where competition is so
keen that neither paper can make any progress.
The day of the political organ is history. Papers
launched for the purpose of catering to either major party
' spells defeat from the very beginning. What the people de-
- mand is a publication giving all the news of the day, its col
umns open to all for a free expression of views and not sold
to any clique or faction. It must be independent in
every sense of the word,' otherwise its death knell is soon
sounded. It cannot survive.
There is no need for two daily newspapers in Albany
, any more than a dog with two tails. The fact that they have
' consolidated shows good business sense and the people of
that community feel gratified that they wjll be served far
- better than ever before in a general news way. Advertisers
....... l 1 : ...WU a Ksvriufiit0
will get better results at, a price in nerping mm " -
" rirculation the real asset of the advertiser.
Newspapers all over the nation in the smnller communi-
ties where two daily papers are issued are. doing likewise.
The newspaper game is a strictly business one in these days
and tie fellow who tries to make anything else out of it is
doomed to defeat. It takes more than a pound of ink, a press
and a handful of type to get out a successful publication. It
"" takes thousands upon thousands of dollars, coupled with long
years of service, to reach that degree of success demanded
by the reading public.
o
Much used to be said about sufferings of horses in win
ter, from failure of owners to cover them when exposed to
.... cold winds. Many such owners drive automobiles now, but
there are still horse owners in Douglas county who fail to
; feed their horses well and keep them warm. Many dogs and
; other domestic animals have hard time in winter. You see
these skinny creatures prowling about the town, looking in
garbage cans and waste heaps, for the food that owners fail
to give them at home. A certain family tell how they once
decided to buy a dog that was offered them for a low price.
They were warned against taking the creature, by friends
.. i, b.,w (i,it it nee miss and .mannish. But they had
' faith iu that dog, and believed that with better care, its di.s-j
position would improve. They took him, led ana careu lor
him kindly, and thnt once savage beast developed into a most
good natured household pefc Kindness will change the dis
position of any animal, including some human beings.
o
A Pennsylvania authority declares that no young people
should got married without having at least $500 for pur
chase of furniture, with ?;!00 additional for incidentals.
Hopes are roseate in youth, and many have married with
little but hope for capital. Some of them come out mighty
' well too. But others have not fared so well. Sickness came,
or children created expense, and they could not keep up their
' payments, and lost their furniture. Love must be rather
intense to survive such a strain. H would seem better policy
to have waited a few months lunger, and have at least saved
up enough for the first essentials of comfort.
o
If the money now thrown away in fake stock and worth
less schemes were put into substantial advertising for sub
stantial business enterprises, lots vi business men would be
better off. An investment in an advertising vainpaign for
your own business is far surer to strike pay gold than most
of the "get rich quicV' paper that is offereH to you by whis
pering promoters.
o
