STATE READY TO
EXPLORE LOST CITY
I RENO, New Feb. 20. The re
cently discovered ancient cliff
dweller city sometimes referred to
as Put bio Grande de Nevada, or
Ix)st City, located along the banks
of the Virgin Itiver in southern Ne
vada, is largely on Federal land,
and, in the opinion of Governor
James ScrouKhhani, should be
come the property of the state and
a separate state department creat
ed to povern it and conduct furth
er explorations.
. Nevada has several claims
against th federal government
;for public lands, and the governor,
' in a recent address at Lovelock,
said Borae sort of compromise
agreement may be arranged
whereby the state will become
Bole custodian of the buried city
I area.
Two or more thousands of years
ago, exploration has developed,
people thought to be the ancestors
of the Pueblo Indians of today, es
tablished the city which, after
reaching a high stag? of develop
ment, was allowed to go to ruin.
Whether it was desterted by its
residents voluntarily, whether
they were all slain or captured
and carried off by their enemies,
or all died of disease, is a matter
for speculation. In any event the
city was deserted, and In time be
came buried undue hhuU aud deb-,
ris so that hardly a trace of tt re
mained uutU recent, discoveries.
What is believed to be an irriga
tion system was found, and from
this it is presumed the city's in
habitants were agriculturists and
made the desert bloom in much
the aame manner as "it does to
day in certain sections of the
west.
Archeological investigation is
expected to go forward rapidly
this Bummer. Many mummies and
much pottery from the ruins are
now being Btudied.
