BOSTON, Feb. 14. Three
deaths, the destruction of bridges
and dams and the disruption of
rail, telephone, telegraph and high
way communication in various
sections were listed today among
the results of the flood and Ice
jams that have occurred through
out New England during the last
two days.
Pete Silver lost his life, while
helping to strengthen a railroad
bridge In New Hampshire, Carl
Hooper, a lumberman, was drown
ed while trying to prevent logs
from being carried away in Maine,
and Aiden Loring, 9 years old, was
drowned in a brook at Stoneham,
Mass.

BEKLIN, Feb. 13. When the
apple growers of northern New
York or of the far northwest want
to know when, where, and in how
great quantities it is advisable to
ship their product to Germany,
they will hereafter be able to ob
tain accurate advice from the de
partment of agriculture at Wash
ington, or from its Berlin ofice
at (i Parlser Platz.
They will thereby avoid the
situation that obtained with re
ference to the 1924 crop. Rely
ing upon the advice of European
brokers, the apple growers ship
ped large quantities of apples to
Germany Jn September and Oc
tober. These shipments arrived
about the time that apples from
Czechoslovakia, Austria and
France poured In, and German
apples still further helped to glnt
the market. The result was a
loss to aple growers' all around.
This concentration of shipments
in late autumn has meant also
that in March and April Germany
will have practically no apples. The
European varieties wont keep so
long, it seems, and no provision
has been made for American ap
ples to be shipped. Apparently
nobody has ever made It his busi
ness to supply the American apple
growers with authentic informa
tion, and the department of agrl-

taxi drivers were arrested and
1,500 served with summons in a
police round-up of criminals oper
ating taxicabs without license.
Thirty-five were arraigned in
night court. Nine were sentenced
to the workhouse for operating
without licenses. Fines of tl'j to

others.

spect the 17,000 cabs in the city.
Many drivers learned of the round
up In time to evade the police
net. Some drivers abandoned their
cars in the streets. Others hur

Roots' 80th birthday anniversary

Mr. Root could at first say only:

agents today Investigated reports
that William Dudley (Ulg 11111)
Haywood, who fled to Russia In
litis after he and 82 others were
given penitentiary sentences (or
obstructing the government in
prosecuting the war, had returned
to settle his affairs preparatory to
giving himself up.
Otfiuiuls of the I. W. W. here
denied knowledge of his presence
as also did William Dross Lloyd,
wealthy communist who paid the
government the $.10,000 bonds he
had provided for Haywood. The
I. W. W . headquarters said it
would not be surprised if Haywood
should appear before long. Hay
wood was reported to have left
ltussla where he had been an
agent for the Soviet government a
month ago. A sentence of 20
years In the Leavenworth Federal
penitentiary and a $10,000 fine
were given Haywood by Judge K.
M. Laudls In 1918. He was sent
to the prison but released In 1919
on bonds provided by Lloyd pend
ing an appeal. The sentence was
upheld, but meanwhile Haywood
had fled to Russia.

which Arthur Page of San Francis
co, reputed bootlegger, plunged to

Monday. The claimant of the car
is Roso Page, widow. The district
attorney and sheriff will conduct
the sale as part of the confiscatory
action launched by the state. The
88 quarts of liquor found In the
wrecked car were dumped Into
the sewer at Jacksonville the first
