move on the part of the little narrow-gauge
railroad Is taken both
here and in Lake county as an
other move on the part of the
Southern Pacific to shut out the
Hill lines tn th'ir plans to invade
the Central Oregon territory.
The .petition to the interstate
commerce commission was filed by
F. H. McCartney, president of the
line he announced yesterday in
Lakeview.
He promises that his line will
expand to a standard guage if per
mitted to make the extension. It
is believed here that he would
then extend his line to connect
with the Southern Pacific line
near Odell, when the Natron cut
off Is completed.

celebrating the &0th birthday ot
Liihu Koot, a former bead of the
state department.
The dinner will be In tribute
to Mr. Koot s services to hie coun
try, to the cause of international
justice, to the republican party
and to the Union League Club of
which he has twice been presi
dent. The address as well as
those of other speakers, will be
radiocast. Mr. Hughes remarked
last n&ht at the Lincoln dinner
of the national republican club
that Kew York had been the scene
of hi advent into politics , and
that it apparently was to see his
political demise. His address was
a plea for ."the reasonableness of
Abraham Lincoln," in which
quality he said lay the "test of
our safety, the measure of our
capacity for progress."

self. When she wrote to Jim telling
him her side of the story she could
also tell him good-bye. Surely
that would be the simplest thing to
do, to lip a way quietly, nnd let
matters take their own course. She
could not feel that she wanted tc
