(Continued from pafru 1.)
"Heart disease has supplanted
greatest man-killer."
This assertion was made by Dr. Robert H. Halsey, of
New York, in a paper presented to the American Associa
tion for the Advancement of science at its last annual meet
ing in Washington, D. C. The assertion is further substan
tiated by Dr. Stewart R. Roberts in a paper recently read
before the Southern Medical Association in New. Orleans,
and by figures just given out for the year 1923 by the Unit
ed States Department of Commerce. Dr. Roberts not only
places heart disease as the most deadly destroyer of human
life, but he also points to syphilis as one of the greatest
causes of heart disease. It was said at the meeting that
syphilis is responsible for 52 per cent of all heart troubles.
According to statistics compiled by the Department of
Commerce for the registration area, comprising 87.G per
cent of the population of the United States, heart disease
claimed 1,76,033 lives in 1923, as compared to 105,080
deaths caused by pneumonia and 90,732 by tuberculosis.
Syphilis is credited with a toll of 15,811 deaths.

in.'a tntnl is Arrived at without taking into consideration
deaths caused by some other diseases which are in many
cases a result of syphilitic infection. Experiments recently
made in Paris would seem to indicate that" 76 per cent of
syphilitica have heart trouble. Out of autopsies on 153
known sytfiilitics there were 115 case in ' which vascular
lesions of the heart were found.
"Heart disease has both economic and public health as
pects" said Dr. Halsey in his paper.' "Heart disease is as
sociated with large economic losses, this ailment being the
largest single cause of death we know today. Comparing
present and pa'st rates, there appears to be nn increase in
the mortality of heart disease, and life expectancy has been
greatly decreased as a result," he went on.
Dr. Roberts asserted that there was no more excuse for
having syphilis than leprosy and that while a great portion
of heart disease comes from syphilis, the other portion
comes from degeneration and afflictions of the rheumatic
group, most of which, 'like syphilis, aro entirely prevent
able. Syphilis has its most dangerous effects on tjie heart
between the ages of 45 and 55, although it takes its toil at
nearly all ages, said Dr. Roberts.

Athletic coaches in schools and colleges are prominent
figures now. Judging by newspaper notice and salaries
paid in many cases, there are many who consider the ap
pointment of such an official more important than the en
gagement of a teacher or professor. Still, people of scholas
tic tastes should not underestimate the importance of he
work of jgi athletic coach. He is in a position where ho can
exercise a very powerful influence on development of char
acter. The fans of course judge his work largely by the
degree of success in developing a winning team. JUit if that
fellow is also able to give the idea to the boys that they
must obey the rules of fair play, adhere to the gentleman's
code of conduct, keep themselves clean from vice, his in
fluence may be more useful than that of some teachers who
deal merely with some form of information.
