Father Time given as much promise of going through its switt
growth without colic, teething troubles Bnd other afflictions. If
the world can cash the promises of the new year, we all will
have less to worry about for some time to come, says the Feb
ruary Sunset.
Tk nufatandins feature of the new year is the universal
i d J- 1 w.'ik li. Knurs manhandled yertiddy eve but
swing toward conservatism. Radical experiments with the bases eonrilry Jx of tn
of production and distribution have tallen into distavor. ine
comparative nbundance and order of the pre-war days appeal to
young and old; the fleshpots of Egypt look good to those wan
dering hungry in the desert and Russia still is deep in the
-wilderness.
, The Dawes plan Is being tried out. Pending results, Europe
has a breathing spell of comparative tranquility. American crpps
have1 been fairly abundant and most of the harvest has been
marketed at good prices. The far western drought had its back
broken by heavy rains and snows. Copper has moved from 1 3
cents to I 5 cents a pound, lead ia above 9 cents. If lumber
dropped in price, industry has only itself to blame for speeding
up production too fast. The fruit, fish and vegetable canners
of the far west have been doing exceedingly well and even ship
ping is wiping the salt water out of its eyes and looking up.
There is only one cloud in the sky: Our productive capa
city 'is still too large compared with the world's ability to buy.
Let the demand fall off a trifle on account of new disturbances
in Europe, let our farmers and manufacturers in an excess of
profit enthusiasm produce just a little bit too much and almost
immediately prices will drop, the "whole works will slow down.
Expansion is a word that should be used only in cross-word puz
zles Tor the next five years.

TAX REDUCTION POPULAR.
The national industrial conference board shows by a care
ful survey that there is nothing more unpopular than any prop
osition to increase federal, state and local taxes, remarks an ex
change. This statistical body shows that during 1921-23, in
clusive, while state and local taxes increased nearly I 5 per cent
federal taxes decreased more than 27 per cent. While federal
taxes were reduced $1,000,000,000 in three years, states and
political subdivisions have been borrowing and spending heavily.
n 1919. these subdivisions borrowed $691,000,000; in 1923.
$1,063,000,000; during 1924. over $ 1,300.000,000. Corre
spondingly, state and municipal subdivision taxes have increas
ed from $2,956,000,000 in 1919 to $4,449,000,000 in 1923,
and probably will exceed live billion dollars in 1924.' But the
tide has turned and many states and localities have reduced their
levies and are proposing further reductions. The cost of edu
cation doubled between 1918 and 1923. costing $1,530,000.
000 for public schools alone in 1922. High taxation in every
fqrrh, except possibly public schools and public roads, is on the
toboggan slide.
o
Covernor Pierce says if the appropriation for mainten
ance of the state penitentiary is trimmed he will turn loose a
flock of fifty convicts on the state as a penalty for the "mis
demeanor." Well, we would just as soon have this bunch at
our rear entrance as the tax collector putting a padlock on the
front door. So, cut "er fifty-fifty governor, knd send out some
of your special emissaries and well polish up our old muskets
and do our best to cope with the denizens of the underworld.
0
. Five persons from various parts of the state have been
aent to the state asylum, their dementia having been brought
about through solving cross-word puzzles. We ought to get a
bill passed by the state legislature to immediately ban this in
nocent diversion with a paid commission . to handle cross
word puzzle "nuts" who persist in burning the candle nt both
ends.

The number of bills so fur introduced at tlie preseni ses

the entire session they may be less. The fact that the members
organized quickly at the beginning of the 1925 session, which
