GROUNDHOG THOUGHTS.
Ancient tradition aayi that on February second, the
- groundhog or woodchuck comes out of his hole, and decides
whether or not to remain out by the weather conditions of that
. day. The sophisticated American passes by auch a supersti
tion with a smile. Perhaps there are some city bred folks who
. never heard of it. Yet those of ua here in Roseburg who were
" brought Up in country homes, find these ancient sayings very in
teresting. In pioneer times people were close observers of ani
' mala and of the weather and changing seasons. They did not
. have many books. Nature was their book. It gave them a cer
tain serene contentment, and was i subject of perennial inter
est Instead of chasing the latest fads, wearing themselves out
in trying to keep up with their neighbors, they found entertain
ment in the scenes about them. A herd of cattle in the barn
yard would seem as interesting and dramatic and humorous to
them, as any theater play would be to us. The instincts of ani
mals must have interested them greatly. They observed that
certain species have a power for foretelling weather conditions
and discerning other matters hidden to humans. No doubt
the groundhog tradition came into existence as a result of at
tempts to interpret the perceptive powers possessed by animals.
Those simple old habits of our ancestors would seem terribly
dull to us now. But the men and women who watched the
woodchucks and other dumb beasts, found infinite pleasure in
observing their frolics and struggles and labors, and thereby
became better able in many ways to use their eyes and wits than
we are.
Men should pay more attention to proprieties of footwear,
according to representatives of the shoe retailers present at their
organization' national convention, and not commit breaks like
wearing awkward looking winter shoes in summer. But they
might reflect how much more ungainly the men of a previous
generation were, with long leg boots of heavy cowhide, some of
which could be removed only with a bootjack, their wives often
having to assist. While the men of today may never go in for
the latest shoe styles as much as the designers might wish, it
would promote self respect if they would shine up a little more
frequently!

Changes In the president's cabinet are constantly occurring,
which raises the question why the government can not keep its
head officials year after year the way a business corporation
would. One reason is that it is costly business holding these
high posts. The salary of $12,000 must melt away fast with the
entertaining an3 other expensive habits expected of these peo
ple. The salary may make no difference to some of these big
men. who are wealthy anyway. But as long as the government
pays on a scale far below that of private business, it will have to
change its public officials often, and frequently lose very good
men, to the detriment of its service.
The churches are urged to give up the spirit of denomina
tional competition, in an address by Rev. Dr. Vermilyea, gen
eral secretary of the Home Mission Council. He tells the de
nominations they can not meet the staggering task before them
unless they act unitedly. Competition is deeply rooted in hu
man nature. It is hard to keep that spirit out of church rela
tions. Sumetimes weak churches are incited by this partly un
worthy motive to wake up and do something useful. Yet as a
rule competition between churches wastes in futile rivalry, en
ergy that should be given to the causes of human progress.

well, the school site committee has disposed of its labors
and "passed the buck" to the school board to make selection of
a suitable plot of ground for the proposed new school building.
If the five members of the board have as much difficulty arriv
ing at a conclusion as the general committee it may yet take a
vote of the people of this school district to settle the matter.
