PLANS ARE OUTLINED
Makes Recommendations

States That Pros

Will K. Holbein, secretary of the
Roseburg Chamber of Commerce,
today submitted lo the board of di
rectors his report covering the ac
tivities of the pant year. The report
deals in a item-nil way wllh the
work that lias been dime and the
prospects for the coming year, ills
reKrt Is as follows:

"On February 19, 1924, your Bee- re8,.ntlng at least fifteen years con
retary submitted a statement of tillu0u8 service in the employ of the
conditions lis he found them ujion Tt-k-phone and Telegraph company,
entering upon his duties, and lie IsK- p Brown, who has been In the
glad to say that this year he is ,.mpi0y of the company for the past
able to paint a much more pleasant I fftw.n years, receiveil a gold bnt-
picture.
'At the present writing all other
organizations in Roseburg are work
ing In complete harmony with the
chamber, and there is no pood rea
son why tliis condition of affairs
fcliould not obtain throughout the
coming year.
"During the fall months your Bee-
ruiupv Hut nit thn nrrnmnl t nhtnpn Is
of the Chamber of Commerce and a
careful perusual of this report will
show that an earnest effort was
made to make the chamber the real
power-house of the city.
"The questionnaire sent out early
last year to all members furnished
the necessary data' for a program of
work, and all suggestions received
honest attention and In most cases
the board of directors and secretary
were able to show concrete re
sults. "During the year Just closed
many new settlers were brought to
Douglas county, and the chamber
cooperated fully In this movement.
Our records Bhow over sixty fami
lies up to September 1st, as locat
ing in the county. We have Just re
ceived a report from the Southern
Pacific agent at Roseburg reporting
twenty-three families arriving here
in September, and expect to have
the report for October, November
and December in a few days, which
no doubt, will bring the total for
last year up to over 100 families lo
cating In Douglas county in 1124.
"During the past year, or from
March 1st, to December 31st, over
forty new members were added to
the chamber roll, making
total of
u7 memrers at the close of busi
ness December 31st. 1!24. There
was a balance due on 1924 member
ship dues of something over $:t.r0,
and 10 due from one of our county
chambers of commerce for booth
rental at the Home Products Show
last September.
"As is usual In all chambers of
commerce the world over there has
been some criticism of the organiza
tion ami your secretary. It cannot
be expected that all people w ill
think alike at the same time on any
-liven subject, and the man has not
been born that can please everyone.
So the average chamber of com
merce secretary expects criticism,
however unjust, and does not usual
ly become excited or discouraged
when it comes. Furthermore, the
secretary being an employe is
naturally the tarcet, especially
when someone wishes to side-step
his duty lo his community and the
organization. Roseburg Is not In a
class by itself in this regard, but all
secretaries In the state of Oregon
and elwwhere have the same spirit
to contend with in a more or less
degree.
"The pat year has been devoted
In large measure to becoming ac
quainted with conditions and men.
so that the year U2i starts us off
with a set of committees that can
not be surpassed anywhere. Kery
committeeman was selected
wllh I
the utmost care for his particular
task, and already splendid work
hns been done by those committees
that have organized for the year's
work.
