with more avidity than the political intelligence. Even the men
are not immune from this influence. Many who are of middle
ago become somewhat indifferent on the clothes question. But
the-'young fellows refuse to be content with the commonplace
and. unimaginative styles that satisfy the older element. They
argue that careful dressing helps them make influential friends
anil succeed in their work. At heart they may cherish the
thought that it makes them more dazzling in the feminine eye.
As for the women folks, bless 'em, it seems naturally feminine
for them to adore tasteful and artistic dress. Some philosophers
will say that their motive is the feeling that attractive clothing
ia the bait by which they allure the men, and that they still de
pend on their power to charm and fascinate the other sex as
the principal means by which they make their way in the world. '' Sutherlin Moon, takes excep.
Others contend that the women dtess to please other women.
They claim that women realize that men are uncritical in such
matters, but that they feel that the searching scrutiny of their
own - can not be avoided, and that to hold their own in so
ciety, their dress must be up to a certain standard of correct
elegance. There are a great many women who dress simply,
yet who win friends and attention because whatever they take
hold of they do very well. Efficiency from now on is likely to
be .a greater force in the world than" frills and fine feathers.
Yet. neatness and a certain attention to detail in clothing helps
n! preserve his or her self respect, and meet the world with
greater confidence.

;;; The Salvation Army is organizing boys' clubs nil over the
country, nnd having remarkable success with them. Young
stara that used to spend their time lifrhtins;, window breaking,
roaming the streets, etc., are being straightened out. The prin
ciple on which they do it, is that of giving the boy plenty for his
htthds and feet to do. Manual training, on automobile work,
carpentry, etc., and all the populnr games, are the incentives.
Almost all the so-called bad boys of America could be set on
the-path of useful citizenship, by a similar appeal.
The country ia alarmed about the prevalence of crime, and
tho. schools and churches and government are being implored
to do something to promote higher moral standards. The trouble
is often right in the homes, because the parents are too busy to
talk to their children. During all the years when these young
mltlds are receptive, when they want to know whnt the parents
tniriK about the movies they see and the books they read, the
parents are too busy to get close to their children, and gradu
ally these young folks get into wrong ways of thinking.
o
There ia one thing positive, the committee selected to get
a suitable plot of ground for the proposed new school building
is not going to contract for any land until the exact coat thereof
haa. been alntcd. The committee ia not disposed to buy in the
open nnd then be ptesenled will, a bill for the purchase price.
