What do they mean
by "western coffee1'?
THEY mean that superb beverage lh,at
gave the West its reputation as the home
of coffcc-cxccllcnce. They mean Hills
Bros. Red Can Codec, pride of the coflfee
. loving West, toast of millions from Puget
Sound to the Mississippi.
Break the vacuum seal of a tin of Hills
Bros. Inhale that sense-thrilling bouquet!
Brew a cup and taste that wonderful
flavor! Any wonder Hills Bros, is The
Recognized Standard of coffee-quality?
And that flavor is sealed for keeps in
vacuum. Hills Bros. Coffee is economical

MUSICIANS WANTED FOR
U. S. ARMY BAND IN CHINA
The recruiting officer for the
Portland, Oregon, recruiting dis
trict in the liailway Kxchange
building, liaj been recently author
ized to make enlistments for the
I5lh Infantry Land In China. This
la considered a very choice assign
nient for several reasons. In tile
first placti the- American forces In
China are, In effect, a legation
guard stationed at the Anierlcun
barracks III the city of Tientsin.
Most of the leading countries of the
world keep troops there ulso, each
In their own quarter or section.
For instance Ihe French are In the
French quarter and the English are
ill the Kuglish quarter and the Jap
anese In the Japamie quarter, "etc.
Living conditions In China are
very reasonable much cheaper
than In llils country, and on top of
thut one dollar of American money
Is worth 11.97 In Chinese money.
This price of exchange fluctuates of
course.
The pay per month for army mu
sicians rungee from lo $1G per
month during first enlistment, lo
this must bo added the value of ra
tions, clothing, quarters. Instru
ments, light, h-at, medical end den
tal attention, etc., which is estl
matt tl to b'. equivalent to an In
crease In the monthly payment of
lioni $5ll to J75, or more.
I Men in army bands have no mili
tary duties lo perform other than
thut of playing an Instrument
straight musical duties which ukuuI
ly consist of about three concerts
per week und one dance w hich llle
orchestra mostly plays. Of course,
they do more or less practice on
their Instruments, dully.
Men w ho play the following ln
strumeiits nre wanted: eaxapho-ie,
clarinet, bass drum, cornet, basoon,
busB und French horn. It Is ulso de
sired that several uf these men
should be able to double on the
violin.
