SAI.EM. Jan. 14. (Special to
New, Hevlew.) The legislature or
ganized according to prearranged
ttluiix listened tn the uovernor'a
message and haa begun to get j
dow n to business. Tht governor's I
message w as long, made many I
recommendations, but did not con-'
tain mutu mat was uew. .jie;
courageously defended the income
tax. and set forth others of his
well known ideas. The message
evoked more, applause from the gal
leries than from the joint assembly.
Doubtless some things recommend
ed will have attention from the leg
islature. Douglas county has received rec
ognition in committee assignments
aa follows: Representative Here her
Is a member of the committee on
horticulture, the committee on
health and public morula nnd the
committee on roads and highways.
l ne lust mentioned assignment is,
of course, of great importance to
Douglas county. Representative
Fisher Is a member ofthe follow
ing committees: cities and towns,
elections, mining, public lands. If
tiio proposed amendment of the pri
mary Irw should reach considera
tion ln the house, It will doubtless
be referred to the committee on
elections, of which Representative
Fisher is a member.
There will be a difference of
opinion as to the so-called child
labor amendment, and this subject
i likely to be warmly discussed.
Doubtless most of the members at
one time felt friendly to the amend
ment, but careful study of Its pur
port and effect seems to be con
vincing an increasing number of
thoughtful people that the proposi
tion is altogether too wide in scope
and curries ih It great danger.
The uiu nas already been Intro
luced to abolish the office of state
market agent and there is a fair
possibility that it will pass, not
withstanding the continuance of
that office lies very close t to the
V'art of the governor. One of the
governor's recommendation was
that the policing of the highways
be committed entirely to the state
highway commission. Under exist
ing conditions, an observer would
hardly expect such a measure to be
adopted. There will be great reluc
tance to increase the powers of the
governor or of those officials ap
pointed by him.
There will be considerable Inter
net taken in the matter of the pro
hibition statutes, but It Is quite
likely that mof.t of the biicki
thrown will be nfmed at the gov
ernor wild his prohibition commis
sioner, Mr. Cleaver, rather than at
