The report states that the av-'
erase condition of the winter:
wheat crop in Washington, Ore-!
gun and Idaho on December 1, 1
was much below the condition
on December 1, 1S)23. A five
percent increase in the acreage
planted to rye is reported.!
Washington wheat acreage is
placed at 1,518,000; Oregon at
1,021,000 and Idaho at 357,000.,
The average condition of the!
crop in Washington is estimated
at 77 percent compared with 84;
for last year Oregon 87 compared'
with iii last year, and Idaho Hi
compared with 94 last year.

A recess today interrupted de
fense action to show that Law
rence M. Hight, who with Mrs.
Elsie Sweetin is charged with
the murder by poisoning of
Wllford Sweetin, was mentally
(loianged. Testimony that Hight
was of unsound mind will be
continued Monday. defense coun
sel announced yesterday.
Mrs. Mary Eaton, 22, nights'
elder daughter testified that
when she was about 10 years of
ago sho had seen her father bite
a mule on the nose.
Mildred Hight, his youngest
daughter, said Hight acted
"queer" after an attack of in
fluenza. She told of his taking
up the ministry, asserting he had
seen a "bright light."
Dr. H. W. Walker, Hight's
cousin, testified to mental de
fectiveness in the family. Hight's
father, he said, was in a bad
mental condition seven years be
fore his death. One brother
died In an insane asylum, he ad
ded and another was considered
mentally weak.

sociated with Fred Jones in the
ownership and management of the
Terminal barber shop, today pur
chased Mr. Jones' interest in the
business, and will assume sole
control of the 'popular barber busi
ness Immediately afier the first of
the yi'ar. Mr. Jones Is disposing of
his interest in order to be with his
wife, who Is now in Petaluma,
California. Mrs. Jones' mother Is
an invalid and the presence of her
daughter is required there, bo that
Mr. und Mrs. Jones will make their
home In Petaluma. Eventually
they expect to return to Itoseburg.
Mr. West will maintain the two
chair shop and operate the busi
ness In the same satisfactory man
ner as at present.
