ROSEBURG, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13. 1924.
SAINT VALENTINE.
I
Ancient custom made February 11 a kind of lover's festival.
Shakespeare had Uie notion that on this day birds begin to mate in
anticipation of the spring nesting time. Perhaps from this the
idea came that spring is the season when human love is most apt
to begin. The world has always had a keen interest in lovers,
since out of their union there comes new life and the reproduc
tion of humanity. While these lovers are sometimes rather
absurd in their overflowing sentiment, yet the world looks at them
; with a tolerant eye. If it was not for the sacrifices that lovers
: make, the world would soon die out. Love is a mysterious pas
I ision. It is not without significance that in old Greek art, Cupid
was sometimes represented as bearing a whip. The affections
; that he incites can make people very happy or very miserable, and
baffled love has caused perhaps more agony than any other feel
I ing. The course of true love never runs smooth, says the old say
i ing. Considering all the troubles that lovers have, it is perhaps
natural that the date traditionally known as a lovers' festival has
1 been named for several of the saints and martyrs of the Christian
.' church, ns many lovers feel in need of saintly guidance at such a
i period of stress. I'eople come out the best if they refuse to allow
; their affections to be dominated by physical passion, and try to
find a mate with whom they will be mentally congenial, and who
will hnve loval traits of character. Many people make a brilliant
appearance as lovers, but it would be difficult to live with them.
