an evening party, they feel that their sacred privacy is infringed

sensitive shrinking from publicity and conceal their movements
go far as possible. Vet these same folks may read with eagerness
the reports printed about other people's doings, and they might
refuse to buy a paper that did not show enterprise in collecting
such information.
On the other hand you can hardiy meet some folks on tiic
street without getting a suggestion that you print certain items
about them. However, there are not many oi mese
seekers. It is in most eases a sensible thing, if people are doing
anything interesting, for them to call up or write to the newspa
per office, and give out an item just as they want it printed, inen
it will be sure to go in right.

gives credit to people for achievement, helps people get ac
quainted. The personal aide of this work causes newspaper men seme
worry, 'and they would be better pleased if the public demanded
less of it, and wanted more space given to public problems. Lut
as long as the public demands it. and if scandals are avoided, it
M-ems a harmless way of pleasing the popular taste. People might
as well accept it as a fixed custom of American life, which is
easier to conform to than to oppose.
In its report published yesterday the tax supervising com
mission had the following to- say in reference to reducing county
expenses: "The commission was particularly impressed with the
fact that the parties who appeared before it in behalf of reduction
of taxes invariably asked for reductions in some department of
the county or for some purpose in which they had no personal
interest, and as a rule, very little knowledge." This is quite fre
quently the case in many instances of tax reduction. It is an easy
matter to stand on the side lines and criticise the other fellow,
tut when you get face to face with bare facts, get a reid know
ledge of things in tho right light, you eiuite often determine that
the feHow at the wheel is steering the ship better than you could
do under like conditions.
Well, wa will now forget that there ever was such a thing pro
posed as bridge to Alexander's addition. It has been a subject
,uch discussed for the past several years, with no practical re
ilts. We still maintain, however, that the park would have been
u mighty valuable asset to Roseburg, and a. the years go on the
day will come when its need will be greater than at the present
